Every night at suppertime I'd come home to a friend of mine An ordinary mutt with fleas But Boots just meant the world to me! God short-changed his pedigree But he gave Boots personality So brave; he'd run when birds would land So fierce; he'd lick a burglar's hand! When Boots would make my temper rise He'd whine like to apologize Then melt my anger with his eyes Memories are hard to take A car – then Boots – then a squeal of brakes And my whole world came tumbling down 'Cause Boots just lay there on the ground Tears made Boots so hard to see But if dogs can smile, he smiled at me And then as if to say "so long" He raised his paw; then Boots was gone I know it's hard to understand But "Boots" was more than just a friend He lived to love me to the end. But now it's almost suppertime And God I miss that dog of mine His trust, his love, his loyalty Boots, you meant the world to me!
