Tritagonist

In literature, the tritagonist (from Ancient Greek τριταγωνιστής (tritagōnistḗs) 'third actor') or tertiary main character is the third most important character of a narrative, after the protagonist and deuteragonist. In ancient Greek drama, the tritagonist was the third member of the acting troupe. As a character, a tritagonist may act as the instigator or cause of the sufferings of the protagonist. Despite being the least sympathetic character of the drama, they occasion the situations by which pity and sympathy for the protagonist are excited.: 451  more »

I saw them in the streets
Fighting over the cobblestones
They never owned and persecuting
Any thought not their own

The Butcher groupthought hatred on their behalf
Then whispered propaganda in their ears
To spout from their mouths

The Butcher avows, "I'll make a silk purse from
A pig's ear" a master of craft
I've seen him make a pig's purse
From the finest silken negligees

Every Farmer stops to beat his meat
For the price can't be beaten
The Housewife stops to meet his beat
Hoping to become the next Salome
To others, The Butcher offers political commentary
And pride
Like lions thrown like swine
Thrown before pearls

The government is on Christ's shoulders
And yet here's a bumper sticker
And donation envelope
Support your partisan ship
There will be wars and rumors of wars
But arm your tongue and sharpen
Your gun over others' freedom of thought
Watch The Housewife suck a Senator's dick
By a produce stand
And her Farmer husband whore
For God and King
See them justify it because

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to him belong
They are weak but he is

Their strong covering for cheap grace
As if a Quaalude for their spirit
And yet The Butcher claims it isn't righteous
To hate the junk-food sayings
Itching at immature ears
Nor hate the distrust
Between Farmer and Housewife
Or the lustful shimmer in their eyes

That happiness is a warm ploughshare's edge

It's still a sword beaten into their hands
If The Farmer discovered his Housewife
With the Off-Duty Guard from across the street
Someone will die by the other's hand
If they ever notice The Butcher covered
In bubonic plague
Then remove his knives to heal
His sores, he will bring hell to pay

I watched unseen the rabid lions
In the streets plotting murder while
Bartering sanity for the price
Of meat and pride of man
