Here's the tale of the crusty sea captain
His daughter, the fair Emmaline
And I, her young suitor Robert
Here's the tale of the long goodbye

The captain was master of peril and treasure
Battling storms and pirates at sea
Down round the horn and up to Hong Kong
Trading in gold and antiquities

Cheerio I yay

High on a sea cliff, in the captain's mansion
Emmaline waited, pacing the widow's walk
Shining like gold, a diamond, a star
I spied that treasure and swore she'd be mine

So it started the first time I saw her
And it goes on long after she's died
Stuck in my gaze, I can't turn my eye
From the shame in the shadow
Of a long goodbye

Tally-ho I yay

I sought the captain down on the docks
Boldly requesting to wed Emmaline
Up roared the captain, maybe you'll do
But, first I'll be testin yer mettle

I'll take you to sea as my cabin boy
Say yer prayers for we sail at the dawn
I'll work yer hide and if you don't die
I'll grant you the hand of dear Emmaline

Tally-ho I yay

He gave me a mop and I swabbed all the decks
He slopped me some gruel and I ate it
I climbed up the mast and walked out the plank
And by the tenth week he was grinnin

The captain cried aye, you're good for the prize
Soon my fine girl you'll be weddin
We filled up the hold and turned back for home
Blind to the stormy seas brewin

And it started the first time I saw her
And it goes on long after she's died
Stuck in my head, I can't turn my eye
From the shame in the shadow
Of a long goodbye

Aye the wind from the west blew a fierce gale
And the poor ship was crashed on the rocks
The captain got caught in the rigging
If he hanged or he drowned matters not

Call me a coward, I watched from the lifeboat
Strapped myself in and finally got rescued
Dropped in Calcutta, drowning in drink
Hiding in shame and sorrow

And so I betrayed poor Emmaline
Stranded high up on the widow's walk
Sending no word of her father's demise
Over and over she whispers and whispers and whispers
Goodbye

So it started the time I first saw her
And it goes on long after she's died
And I can't clear my head
No I can't clear my head
And I can't turn my eye
From the shame in the shadow
Of a long goodbye

Yes, I'm stuck in it, stuck in it, stuck in it
And I cannot clear my mind
Of the pain in the unending echoes
Of a long goodbye
