Well I was strolling through the second hand place Though you wouldn't call me poor When I happened upon this piece of junk Was a lying there on the floor So I bought the thing I waved goodbye To all my friends there at goodwill And that was the start of a love affair When I rescued good old Bill Well Bill he was missing a lot of parts And he was hurting that's for sure So I strapped him to the back of my bike Headed down to the music store Well the man there looked him up and down Said where'd you ever get this thing I said fix him up and tune him up I'm gonna teach him how to sing Well that old four string really came to life I guess he had a lot to say I tried to leave him on the shelf But he'd look at me that way So I picked him up every chance I got And he would begin to cry Telling me the stories of his days long gone by Well he started out in an old jazz band Up in Chicago town That old black man that owned him He could really lay that dixie down Smoke filled bars and big cigars And bottles of red wine Yeah the good times rolled and the whiskey flowed Til the old man up and died He said he once belonged to a hippy chick Boy they sure had some fun Playing and singing those protest songs In the California sun Oh but she grew up and had some kids Couldn't find the time So Bill he got put under the bed Why he might as well had died Yeah we got a lot in common Me and good old Bill We both got holes down in our hearts No one else can fill I can feel him thank me every time that I pick him up to play Me, the porch and Bill the banjo gonna always be that way Well I don't have a glamorous life Just a hard working man When I get home and I'm all alone Gonna do what I can To make old Bill feel wanted He does the same for me Telling the stories about our lives Keep each other company Yeah we got a lot in common Me and good old Bill We both got holes down in our hearts No one else can fill I can feel him thank me every time that I pick him up to play Me, the porch and Bill the banjo gonna always be that way Yeah me, the porch and Bill the banjo gonna always be that way
