LUzA CULT is a collective of multi-disciplinary artists from Glasgow, Scotland – currently consisting of Lui Surreal (Lui MacRae Wolstencroft) and SAVE Az (Azlan Voy Jeffery). Both artists have an arsenal of creative expertise – ranging from music creation and Video production through to painting and sculpture, to name a few. Lui was born in Glasgow – however, due to his father’s occupation as a naturalist he spent his entire adolescence in Tanzania, East Africa. There, with his community, he found an affinity for writing lyrics and making music c. 2012. The vibrant colours of that place shine through in his voice, character and his Art. Azlan born and raised in the UK – found himself in the midst of Scotland’s alternative scene, producing and performing in various punk/ metal bands and producing music himself. The gothic and rebellious nature of this space is embedded in his Art and outlook. Lui and Azlan, the founders of LC, met on the set of Outlaw King a Netflix film about Robert the Bruce and his effort to liberate Scotland from England’s tyrannical oppression. After some initial bonding through music and a shared vision, they began making lyric heavy – experimental, trap songs from scratch in Kinning Park, Glasgow circa 2018. Their music draws heavily from contemporary US and UK hiphop which they infuse with elements of Alternative rock from punk through post hard core. Their aesthetic approach is based in surrealism – the supernatural, colourful and darker elements of life. Both artists seek to infuse their musical practice with the visual arts in an attempt to find a new language. This attitude brings visuals and the possibilities music video has as a platform to the forefront – a creative edge for musicians of the 21st century. Poetry is the keystone of their practice and most of their lyrics revolve heavily around concepts such as freedom, revolution and mysticism. Attempting to ground the listener in the highly politicised reality whilst simultaneously carrying them into metaphorical, imaginary spaces to suggest means for liberation and change – Challenging the unsustainable power structures of todays world.
