How Can You Know?

I've reached the place where dormant questions come out And I'm searching for the answers in the dim light of doubt Overturning the stones all I find is the ground And the blank empty sky forces me to look down Devouring the poetry Dissecting the songs By splicing and resetting thoughts from where they belonged A learned man might tell you it was all done before But all I know is what I see and cannot know more I'll re-write the score I've torn open my eyes in such a frantic attempt To discover what The Bible and the moon landing meant If I should shovel through the clutter of the closet of time Then i can only blame myself for all the blanks that I find Everything is black-and-white, there are no deceptions Everything is absolute except the exceptions I'm scavenging text books and reviewing old films Avoiding the librarians suspicious of spies I'm imitating past lives and distilling their dreams Into the essence of a defense of defining scheme... Along the eternal seam I once believed in prophesy and fate But history has whipped me into submission too late Celebrate the distillate and worship the new myth Or spurn the things that you have learned and counter the drift How can you know? There's a hole in my soul where the rain rushes in I try to keep myself from aging but my hair's getting thin If I tell you that I'm thinking and rethinking again The lessons of my childhood the ways I knew then Would you understand the crime of confiscating my pen If I were you, I know I would... And I wish that you could It won't do any good Cuz how can you know? How can you know?
