Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream

Surprise surprise, the boys are home
My guardian angel's rung down my telephone
The heat's on mister, can't you hear them scream
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream

The curfew comes at the crack of light
The sad old wino aches to dissipate the fright
The jet junk jiver speeds past in his machine
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream

A broken god from a musty world
Sweetly mouthed touched an onyx girl
His prison bars were very hard to clean
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream -Yeah

The Wizard of Oz and the bronzen thief
Ruled my girl with teutonic teeth
But all was lost when her mouth turned green
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream

Silver Surfer and the Ragged Kid
Are all sad and rusted boy, they don't have a gig
Believe me Pope Paul my toes are clean
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream

Black is black and white is white
Some go to Heaven and some get it light
Nobody disapproves but his wicked screams
Whatever happened to the Teenage Dream -Yeah

T. Rex

T. Rex were a British rock band, formed in 1967 by singer/songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. The band formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex, releasing four underground folk albums under the name. Tony Visconti (their producer for several albums) claimed in a documentary on the band that he had taken to using the abbreviated term "T. Rex" as a shorthand, something that initially irritated Bolan, who gradually came around to the idea and officially shortened the band's name to "T. Rex" at roughly the same time they started having big hits (shortly after going electric). more »

About the Title
"Zip Gun Boogie" is a song by Marc Bolan and T. Rex from their 1974 album "Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow." The title refers to a homemade or improvised firearm, often used by street gangs, which aligns with the gritty, urban sound Bolan aimed for in this album.
Historical Significance
Having been released in 1974, "Zip Gun Boogie" was produced during a very transformative period in music, particularly rock and roll, which can be felt in its sound and lyrics.
Change in Sound
With this song and the album "Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow," frontman Marc Bolan began to diverge from the band's traditional glam rock sound. Borrowing elements from soul and funk among others, this song shows Bolan’s experimentation and his attempt to push the band in new directions.
Songwriting and Meaning
Bolan's lyrics in "Zip Gun Boogie" oscillate between the symbolic and the cryptic, emblematic of the lyrical style he adopted during this phase in his career. The song has often been interpreted as a reflection on the trials and tribulations of fame.
Impact on T.Rex's Career
"Zip Gun Boogie" and its parent album marked a critical point in T.Rex's career. The shift in music style was divisive, disappointing some fans while winning others. It was neither a commercial success nor a critical favorite like T.Rex's earlier works.
Performing Artist
Marc Bolan, the frontman of the band T. Rex, wrote and performed "Zip Gun Boogie." Bolan, born Mark Feld, was a songwriter, guitarist, and poet, known for his flamboyant style and pioneering role in the glam rock genre.
Trivia

Current Status
Despite its initial disappointing performance, "Zip Gun Boogie," like the rest of the Zinc Alloy album, has acquired a cult following among T.Rex fans. It is now seen as an interesting example of Bolan’s artistic evolution during his too-short career.
