Merle Haggard & the Strangers

Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016) was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler. Haggard was born in Oildale, California, toward the end of the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launched a successful country music career. He gained popularity with his songs about the working class; these occasionally contained themes contrary to the anti–Vietnam War sentiment of some popular music of the time. I hear people talkin' bad
About the way we have to live here in this country
Harpin' on the wars we fight
And gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be
I don't mind 'em switchin' sides
And standin' up for things that they believe in
When they're runnin' down my country, man
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down the way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep
If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song that I'm singin' be a warnin'
When you're runnin' down my country, hoss
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

I read about some squirrelly guy
Who claims he just don't believe in fightin'
And I wonder just how long
The rest of us can count on bein' free
They love our milk an' honey
But they preach about some other way of livin'
When they're runnin' down our country, hoss
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down the way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep
If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song that I'm singin' be a warnin'
When you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down the way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep
If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song that I'm singin' be a warnin'
When you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

When you're runnin' down our country, hoss
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me
