David Leonhardt is the Washington bureau chief of The New York Times. He joined The Times in 1999 and wrote the "Economics Scene" column, and for the Times Sunday Magazine. Before coming to The Times, he wrote for Business Week and The Washington Post. In April 2011 he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in the "Commentary" category "for his graceful penetration of America’s complicated economic questions, from the federal budget deficit to health care reform". His appointment as Washington bureau chief was announced on July 22, 2011. He began the assignment on September 6, 2011.
