Christopher John Hipkins (born 5 September 1978) is a New Zealand politician who has been serving as the 41st prime minister of New Zealand and leader of the New Zealand Labour Party since 2023. He became member of Parliament (MP) for Remutaka in 2008. Hipkins is often regarded as affable and self-deprecating, and is commonly known by his nickname, Chippy, derived from his initials and his "schoolboy demeanour".Hipkins was born and raised in the Hutt Valley in Wellington, and while at Victoria University of Wellington became heavily involved in student politics.
