We grew up together in the country
With the houses were a quarter a mile apart
Where the people would rise with the sun
And, it was safe to walk home in the dark

I lived on a farm just down the road
And, she was the girl next door
While I really love it here in the country
She was always longing for more

In the daylight we played in the meadows
Watched movies at night on tv
And, I'd picture myself in the role of a hero
And, she was my Leading Lady

She wanted to be up there on stage
In front of the camera and lights
And, though she begged me to follow
I couldn't give up this sweet country life

She was bound for the big city
In search of fortune and fame
While I really love it here in the country
The country will never be the same

Our friends all met at the depot
To see her off on the train
She said, "she had nothing to lose"
And, "everything to gain"

I told her "I hoped she would make it"
I had to tell her that lie
Wo, deep inside my heart was breaking
When I had to kiss her goodbye
