Steve was my friend in Afghanistan
He fought that war, paid quite the price
Getting home, we went our own ways
He sent mail and it told me his tale

India called, he loved his new home
Found his peace in a place called Kurseong
Shared his life and his dreams with the poor
Planted their fields and built their schools

What can I say about my friend
He was my hero, a light in the dark
Unknown by a world that esteems only fame
A simple man who lived by his faith

Life was hard, his path seldom straight
Bills came due, his days ran late
Through it all he never lost his hope
That love endures and calms all our fears

Back in Guelph, I'd settled down
Three kids on, a Mom about town
Weeks ago I learned his end was near
We shared a call, and relived our tears

What can I say about my friend
He was my hero, a light in the dark
Unknown by a world that esteems only fame
A simple man who lived by his faith

Near the end, disease took its toll
Withered his body but never his soul
In Kurseong, his friends brought him food
Prayed and wept for the friend they would lose

Yesterday I learned Steve was gone
His life laid bare in two short lines
When he died, so they said
The rains came strong brought new life again

What can I say about my friend
He was my hero, a light in the dark
Unknown by a world that esteems only fame
A simple man who lived by his faith
A simple man who lived by his faith
