The Wayside

The Wayside is a historic house in Concord, Massachusetts. The earliest part of the home may date to 1717. Later it successively became the home of the young Louisa May Alcott and her family, who named it Hillside, author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his family, and children's writer Margaret Sidney. It became the first site with literary associations acquired by the National Park Service and is now open to the public as part of Minute Man National Historical Park. more »

From her castle comes the Mushroom Girl
Long ago the world had dropped away
Eyes that beg for one to stay
Melt the wax of summers long astray
Words we spoke a thousand times
Smiles fade like sunsets in her mind
Once again the night will come
Longing for the days before we're numb
So paint this picture of a marionette
Tie the ribbon like a noose and draw it 'round her neck
A million days ago we sang
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
She longs to let words slip on by
Incense and the crystals make us blind
Canvas reads her every breath
Sun drops down, reminds me of Macbeth
High up in her castle she
Ponders the young lover's pleas
Will I see her once again
Madness stains the memories of a friend
She paints a picture of a marionette
Ties the ribbon like a noose and draws it 'round her neck
A million days ago we sang
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
Mushrooms grow like summer love
Flown on the wings of morning doves
Slow to sprout and quick to leave
Gone as if it all was make believe
I guess it really wasn't meant to be
The Mushroom Girl has plead her final plea
And down from her castle, once again
Night draws near, the doors close, and then
She paints a picture of a marionette
Ties the ribbon like a noose and draws it 'round her neck
A million days ago we sang
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
High up in her castle she
Hears the dumb young lover's pleas
Take a breath and turn your cheek
Summer's dead and winter's come to be
So paint this picture of a marionette
Tie the ribbon like a noose and draw it 'round her neck
A million days ago we sang
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
Of roses on the Mushroom Girl's beret
