She's staring at the ceiling as she lays in the bed
Attempts to put a foot to the floor
She's trying to ignore the dialog in her head
As she grabs a pair of socks from the drawer

Another set of meetings she'd prefer to avoid
Is on the docket for the rest of her day
She'll interview the hopefuls who aspire to be employed
At a place they wouldn't like anyway

She sometimes contemplates a different life
With a brighter set of stars in her sky
But the daydreaming's got to wait
She notices she's running late
It's coffee and a bite on the fly

Well she shouldn't read too much into it, ain't no thing
Everybody feels this way from time to time
Gives herself a little lecture, a reminder
"Keep your eye on the clock
You've got an 8:45"

He's put a spit shine polish on his well-worn shoes
Didn't get a lot of sleep overnight
Practiced in the shower for at least a half an hour
For responses that he'd better get right

He starts to have a random second thought or three
Perhaps a reckoning is long overdue
This going through the motion's
Just a predetermined notion
Of what everyone's supposed to do

He sometimes wishes for an alternate take
A revision to the storyline
But the daydreaming's got to wait
He can't believe he's running late
It's coming up on quarter to nine

Well he shouldn't read too much into it, ain't no thing
Everybody gets this way from time to time
Pay attention, get a movin' and
Remember, keep your eye on your watch
You've got an 8:45

Well, they meet, greet, say hello
He dreads the customary
"So, tell me all about yourself"
And while responding to the queries
He's developing a theory
His interrogator's not in the room
She's someplace else

She's been impressed with his performance on her witness stand
Sincere and honest self-control
And while he's tried to keep his focus on the task at hand
He's been surprised to meet a kindred soul

Embarrassed 'cause she's gone a little off the rails
She tries to get proceedings back on track
"So, if not for this position, might you have another mission
An alternate or different path?"

He says, I sometimes think that there's another place
With a different set of stars in the sky
She says, "you mean, like a movie scene
With alternate direction
And the actors changing up all the lines?

Well we shouldn't be so curious, but all in the same
Something makes us want to give these situations a name

Call it happenstance
Coincidence, fate, intervention divine
Or a sign
Of the times
Or "8:45..."
