On the Enoree river in South Carolina In the country where nobody goes There was a coupla kids from the city goin' fishin' Where they ended up nobody knows 'Cause they never come back to tell their story And the law could only suppose You see a number of people been lost on the Enoree They figured they were some of those And the river was slow and spiders was droppin' From the branches of the cypress trees When they come upon a log, a fallen 'cross the river And it didn't get there naturally Well there are places where your mamma said You're not to go You shoulda listened now you'll never hear "I told you so." There comes a time when it's too late to turn around And walk away And your time is today Well there's a family livin' on the banks of the river And they go by a Scottish name For 300 years they've lived in that cabin And none of 'em have ever changed No none have been born And none have died And none'll ever be set free As long as Papa keeps a secret In the lead-lined box By the banks of the Enoree Well Mamma said to Papa "Go and get your gun Mary start the fire, put the kettle on Junior get the shovel and tell your sister Rose to put away The corn silk doll she made 'Cause people from the city never understand The sacrifice they're makin' for the promised land The temple and the tomb and the lady dressed in gray And her demands Or the symbols on her hands." Well there's a little pavilion in a clearin' by the river In a spot that Mamma chose And no one is allowed to go near it in November 'Cept for Mamma and her daughter Rose And the rites and the rituals and incantations Have a pre-historic pedigree And Papa keeps their secret In a lead-lined box By the banks of the Enoree Well Mamma said to Papa "Go and get your gun Mary start the fire, put the kettle on Junior get the shovel and tell your sister Rose to put away The corn silk doll she made 'Cause people from the city never understand The sacrifice they're makin' for the promised land The temple and the tomb and the lady dressed in gray And her demands Or the symbols on her hands." Now Mary sews their names In a cross-stitch sampler And she spreads it out across her knee And the muddy waters of the river Know to keep their secrets And they're secrets that you'd never Believe
