Rebus

A rebus () is a puzzle device that combines the use of illustrated pictures with individual letters to depict words and/or phrases. For example: the word "been" might be depicted by a rebus showing an illustrated bumblebee next to a plus sign (+) and the letter "n". It was a favorite form of heraldic expression used in the Middle Ages to denote surnames. For example, in its basic form, three salmon (fish) are used to denote the surname "Salmon". A more sophisticated example was the rebus of Bishop Walter Lyhart (d. 1472) of Norwich, consisting of a stag (or hart) lying down in a conventional representation of water. The composition alludes to the name, profession or personal characteristics of the bearer, and speaks to the beholder Non verbis, sed rebus, whic… more »

I wrote my first love song at the age of eight
And of course, that was years before I'd ever been in love
I just thought that's what songs were supposed to be about
Wrote one inspired by you in the seventh grade
And of course, we weren't lovers, but you were as close as I had come
That should've tipped me off, looking back on it now

And as a kid, I was called mature for my age
They always said it as a compliment
And as a kid, you used to keep me up late
Mind full of things I didn't comprehend

But I was a good student, and I made improvements
C'mon, this is what grown-ups do
Kid, youth is no virtue, and innocence hurts you
I learned that from everyone, most of all you

To be liked by kids, share the most teenage things that you know
And as for adults, they'll be proud if you act like them
Now I'm eighteen in daydreams that formed long ago
But really, I'm closer to ten

And as a kid, the message was always the same
Life is love is sex, take our advice
And as a kid, you taught me lots of fun games
Where some might say that you became my life

Well, I hated that living, but knew that you'd give me
A taste of what grown-ups do
When I beg to be emptied, sometimes it gets tempting
To blame it on everyone, most of all you

And sometimes it's everyone's fault
But every damn second, it's yours
We might both be victims of the same stupid system
But you used it to break down my doors
You always could understand me
But don't you dare pretend to be my fucking family
Did you enjoy my candy, and are you feeling manly
Now that I feel your hands each time I meet your eyes

But I guess I'll keep looking, forgive how you took me
'Cause taking's what grown-ups do
I'll learn to be childish; that's fine and good, I guess
Still, I don't trust anyone, least of all you
