It's not about being blindly proud of who and what you are
But being thankful for you never thought you'd get this far
And looking back from here and now you wouldn't change a thing:
Heal a wound; un-break a bone; restore a dying bird to wing

All the roads you walked before the way that led you here
Have all been worth the wait; the grace; the pain; the blood and sweat and tears
The disappointed, disaffected thoughts in lonely beds
That broken heart and devastated life that echos round your head

If you could count each tear that fell to give to you your here and now
A tapestry so intricate the only way our lives allow
Instead, you'd stand with heavy arms that carry all somehow
All the confused history of hands that never left the plough

When you look into the mirror at your bonny face
Remember that beneath the skin there lies at least million ways
That smiles were shattered; anger bred and dreams were thrown away

Thank your parents thank your grans and granddads for a start
Then thank the genes that make you think and feel and beat your heart

Every word within your DNA's four letter alphabet
Lengthy messages of forbears' pride and stories of regret
Is spelled by taking all the paths they made with all their steps
Their words are gone but what remains are feelings you cannot forget

When everything that makes you who you are is working all as one
That's when you know that all the spirits of your ancestors live on
Within your mind and face and hands and voice though they are gone
Remember in their days just like you now back then on Earth they shone

They live still now in their murmurations through all space and time
Their lives on Earth at least the inverse square law never stops their shine
Their smiles and laughter and their wisdom transmit to your mind
With heavy burdens rarely could they truly relax and unwind

When the story of your life is over and you sleep in peace
Or dream the greatest dream you ever dreamt when your blood flow has ceased
Or in a way that we can't think your soul becomes released
Perhaps you'll meet the ones who made your life and gave steps to your feet

You'll shake their hands and hug and hold them close at them you'll stare
And then you'll see each part of you that made you so unique and rare
Then you'll understand the reasons why you worked for what you cared
And know how what you won in life was that for which you loved and dared
