This is how the story goes
There’s a line of the homeless people in a foot snow
They let them in one at a time
And there’s a man in the back of the line
And the line goes around the block and down the next street
So many people who have nothing to eat
Patiently waiting for their turn in line
How can this be it’s Christmas time
Closer it comes to the man’s turn
Anxiously he waits for food and for warmth
The staff looks inside then back at him
Says,
Sorry we are full take care my friend
The man stumbles off his feet too cold to feel
This has turned from bad luck to something much too real
Solemnly, he looks up at the sky
How can this be its Christmas time
How can this be its Christmas time
And the church down the street sings hallelujah
With the members safe and warm inside
Filled with the Holy Spirit sings hallelujah
Praise the Lord it’s Christmas time
The Pastor says There’s something wrong
He stops the service in the middle of a song
Says,
We’re only serving ourselves this eve
And so many need our help just down the street
When you have nothing at all and nothing left to give
When doubt fills your heart and you have no place to live
We need to share, love, and to be kind
It’s not about ourselves it’s Christmas time

And the church down the street sings halleluiah
As the members march outside
Filled with the Holy Spirit sings halleluiah
Praise the Lord it’s Christmas time
The man finds a bench to seat
Sits for a while then drifts to sleep
Later on he shifts to the ground
As members from the church gather round
They set him up and give him warm food to eat
Wrap him in a blanket and put dry socks on his feet
Says
You are safe won’t you come to our home
To a church down the street that will keep you safe and warm

With the members safe and warm inside
Filled with the Holy Spirit sings halleluiah
Praise the Lord it’s Christmas time
Now rewind ten hours ago
Before the line and before the snow
The man is first right on time
And just like Jesus he trades his spot in line
I have nothing at all and nothing left to give
Doubt has filled my heart and I have no place to live
Still, I will share, love, and will be kind
It’s not about myself it’s Christmas time
