Down by the river I first met my friend
Where station towers rise and the railway line ends
Over fields of the flood plain I wandered alone
Where an estuary flows down past the military zone

I heard crickets and larks and the power plant hum
Past horses out grazing in the haze of the sun
When a voice spoke behind me, I turned and I saw
A figure appear where no one was before

Dark eyes like a visor, speech without mouth
Yet I felt intense kindness, and a sense of sweet truth
Only you can receive me, I heard someone say
Face to face with my fate on the fields of Grays

My strange Mr spirit came many times more
We walked and we talked by the Old Saxon shore
(As beside us great ships came in from the sea)
At Tilbury great ships ride the tide off the sea
Loaded with cargoes of Chinese TVs

Now I don't get on well with the others at work
The people avoid me; they think I'm a jerk
I've abandoned my place in the city estate
And wander the marshes from dawn until late

I hear ghosts of the boatmen moan from the mud
Buried beneath the slow ebb and deep flood
And he moved before me in mysterious ways
As I followed with wonder over fields of Grays
One day he told me he would soon have to leave
And faded away in shades of the eve
Pylons stand tall, their power lines hum
Storm clouds obscure the red setting sun

A thunder storm broke as the dark night it fell
Lights on a fence marked towers of hell
(To the station) There he'd been taken in captivity
A terrorist threat to the state's safety

In a rage I scaled the security gates
To save my comrade and make good our escape
But an alien intruder by alarms was betrayed
And was taken away from the fields of Grays

Fog horn blow
Dawn bells toll
He shall come to let us know

Three times in the evening
Ring the Angels bell
Free men from believing in the tales demons tell
Sing Gabriel, oh Gabriel, oh SOS, oh Gabriel

Bars on the window, locks on the door
Copper and tin line the walls and the floor
A technician sits at his influence machine
Relaying brain sayings through televised dreams

But away in a medium beyond their control
There's a muse with a mission to rescue our souls
These relics remain we will no longer need
'Cause soon we'll be rising on ironic beams

Alone in the night I come into my own
Out of this world and a long way from home
Above this flat space riding heavenly Rays
To (Commune with another) one far beyond us through fields of Grays
