When the town is fast asleep, Mister Trouble makes his round.
When the town is fast asleep, Mister Trouble makes his round.
Then every time he knocks on somebody's door, you can hear a mournful sound.

Some poor woman cries out, “My man is gone. Lord, what am I goin' a do?”
Some poor woman cries out, “My man is gone. Lord, what am I gonna do?
“I never knowed how much I need him, until the day he say we were through.”

Then Mister Trouble strolls on down, stops at the house next door.
Then Mister Trouble strolls on down, stops at the house next door.
A poor man cries out, “My woman's gone. Baby won't be back no more.”

I lost the best woman I had, listened to just what my friends had to say.
I lost the best woman I had, listened to what my friends had to say.
And ever since my baby ‘s been gone, I been dyin' slowly day-by-day.

Then Mister Trouble walks on down, stops at the last house in the line.
Then Mister Trouble strolls on down, stops at the last house in the line.
He knocks on the woman's front door, she ‘s standing in the back door cryin.'

She says, “Mister Trouble, I'm not cryin' ‘cause I'm lonesome, I'm happy as can be.
I'm not cryin' ‘cause I'm lonesome, I'm happy as can be.
I thought I lost my good man, but he ‘s heading home to me.”

“So Mister Trouble, please go and let me alone.
So Mister Trouble, please go and let me alone.
‘Cause I haven't had a piece of mind, since my good man been gone.”
