Made by dividing John & Jackie into three, technically five, but this story is mine Yet its reverberations are for anyone who looks and feels like me - repetitively defending what can't be seen See me. Whole and complete Like a beautiful tapestry, the black and white in me, delicate threads, stitching me together Within this single body is the work of navigation-the delicate dance of two worlds, excavation I am forging my path amidst the ebb and flow of duality. I am neither one nor the other, yet both are in me I discover my true identity within these intricacies-I am discovering me So tonight, on this stage, where words and movement collide, my identity takes its first strides toward balance, and a delicate dance begins Tall and straight, my teachers taught me Polycentric and polyrhythmic, my ancestors speak to me. Both embodied. One taught, one lived It's parabolic. Two sides to every story. Dichotomy A duality lives in me; look closely, and you'll see the enslaved and the master, beauty, and disaster Physical and spiritual, moral, and political, ecclesiastical, and anti-social Uncomfortable in my own skin because the line between what I love and hate about myself? It's paper thin Failed attempts of erasure leave you focusing on the line Do you see it? Can you even see what's on either side? Code-switching two identities, two movement vocabularies. Turmoil inside I'm hoping for the sides to blend, blur, merge, mix. Two sides becoming one It's a beautiful ride, not to decide who to be. Move to the center Move with me. Centering both. No longer filtering. Embracing both. All of me Tonight, I sift through my archive Finding parts of me that I recognize I realize I've parted ways with that part or departed; it died A portion of me has to die to make way for the new I am made new A new day A new sound An old king A new crown I am scratching at the surface, uncovering the root of the word breath, its spirit Can you feel it? I feel my ancestors' breath on my neck. Encouraging I acknowledge their presence and stand on the shoulders of those who came before. Through movement, sound, and voice.; tonight, I explore Exploring a new chapter that longs to be read. It's overdue. come. I lay myself bare. witness as I journey with you
