Once upon a time, long ago, when the flowers had not yet bloomed and there were only the heavens and the barren lands beneath Before the stars adorned the inky black night great titans resided in our clouds They lived in their ivory towers and opal castles and watched the world below These titans were a cowardly kind and although curious, they wouldn't dare venture to the sunbaked world below One day, a young titan princess found herself at the corner of the heavens She knew to be careful, for she could slip The wind watched the princess tread ever so gently on the ledge The wind had a cruel sense of humour and he was feeling especially wicked and bored today For his own amusement, he blew a great gust of wind, lifting the princess right off her feet And with that single blow, the princess found herself tumbling to the lands below For days on end, she fell until finally she reached the ground She looked around in hopes of finding a way back home The sun had not been kind to this place Where there should have been green rolling hills, there was only rubble and muck And where water should flow, dust clouds rolled The princess's heart grew in rage How could the winds and sun be so cruel Throwing her fist to the heavens, she called for her family, but received no answer Her family could not reach her now They wouldn't dare She cursed at the clouds and the gods above, rampaging the land in fury For many moons, she did not rest She tarred at the ground until her fingers wet with blood howling until even her voice ran from her Exhausted, the titan lady came to the end of her riot Collapsing to the floor, she held her head in her hands Her heart now heavy in sorrow and only the black of night to keep her company, she longed for the warmth of life again Her sadness welled beneath her eyes and little drops of water trickled down her cheeks The tears did not stop, and she did not want them to The princess was too downhearted to care She cried and cried until there was nothing left to cry She felt the wind taunting her, his breath twisting her hair, and stood to curse him some more but as she opened her eyes she was left silent The once desolate wasteland was no more The land around her was now busy with life Grass spread and flowers bloomed Birds flew and sheep grazed From the fed plump soil stood tall a mighty forest of great yew trees, and upon their branches lay hundreds of sleeping babies The princess cared for the babies like they were her own, and she loved them dearly She was full of joy, but her heart remained that rage and gloom Not all of her joy could fit She decided she was to banish it to the ocean She balled up and sank it with a rock As the lump sank, it began to take the form of a colossal beast His eyes burned with a ferocious flame, and it was hungry Dragging himself from the sea, he stalked across the land, consuming all he could The wind grew cold, and the snow choked the land The animals flocked south Leaves fled their branches, and the water froze in fear Still not satisfied, the beast trampled the land until he came across a mighty forest Prowling through the trees, he followed the sound of lullabies and laughter, till he found what he had been searching for There, playing in the meadow, was the princess and her children The beast drooled at the thought of eating them up, and let out a savage howl She tried to gather all her babies, but it was too late The creature was too fast Driven by hunger, she knew she could not save them The princess looked to the sky, and cried out to her family, pleading with them to help her this once but her cries fell on deaf ears once more No one was listening No one would help There was one, the knight He watched over the princess with curiosity, and had grown fond of her The knight always dreamed of a companion, someone to ease his loneliness For it's incredibly isolating to be filled with nothing but shadow Stretching out a murky hand, he called to the princess and said, Lady of the land, please be not sad I will hide your babies within my black cloak Not even light reaches me up here I only ask one thing of you You can see there is nothing but me and I wish for company Let your children live with me Let them light my dreary soul The princess agreed frantically, and lifted the babes to the knight Eighty-eight crying babies huddled in his palm These were all that remained The beast, now full slept off to sleep under a large oak tree, his thirst satisfied And as he slept, frost began to thaw, and with that, the animals and flowers sprung to For month after month, the beast would return Starved, he would ravage the land, turning it cold But the princess was clever Each month he would come, she would lure him to the meadow and he would follow, in hopes of a meal The princess sat in the meadow, nursing what the beast thought to be a baby, and in his starved state, he would lunge, snapping up the child whole But this baby was no baby It was nothing but a rock, a stone plucked from the ground The rock was so heavy that it left the beast full, and with his hunger quenched, he would return to his slumber The princess repeated this trick every time he would return, without fail it would work But with this, she knew her babies could never return to her While the beast lived, they were not safe And so, she lives amongst the trees, nurturing her home under the eyes of the sun But as night comes to pay his visit, she rests her weary bones and bathes in starlight Till this day, she waits for when her babies can return to her
