There's a legend, they say, that the waves chose a person one day
A brave and courageous, witty young pirate-to-be
A runaway child both fearless and wild
Who boarded a ship bound for sea
Tiny in size with a talent to hide
She squeezed in behind barrels of gold
So the tale of Eliza Is told

With her cutlass of steel and her hand on the wheel and her crimson hair wild as the flame
In tales that are told by the pirates of old, we'll always remember her name
So come hearty boys and we'll sing of the joys of a life on the tumbling sea
With a wind in our sails and yo-ho for the tales of Eliza Barbary

She was found in the galley one night,
With a fire in her eyes, and some fight
So they threw her a sword and told her, "Kid, you'll do alright"
Now she's miles out to sea, and the stowaway's happy and free,
Scrubbing the deck in the day and watching the stars blink in the night
She grew fierce and strong as the day was long,
She could curse and drink rum with the best
She was canny and bright and the first in a fight when her courage was put to the test

So come hearty boys and we'll sing of the joys of a life on the tumbling sea
With a wind in our sails and yo-ho for the tales of Eliza Barbary

Long years have passed and she's back in the hold
The crew love the lad 'cause she's fearless and bold
They made her first mate and she's counting the gold
When a roar rises up all around
There's clashing of swords as the Navy attack
They broadside the ship and the hull timbers crack
Outgunned and outnumbered and every man-jack
Along gangplanks, they're dragged tied and bound
On the navy deck, they watched the wreck descend to the watery blue
And in the centre of it all, a young figure stood tall as a shot broke the hull into two
Always stoic and brave, she accepted her fate as another soul taken too soon
For Eliza, they prayed. They'd tell tales of the day they lost the heart of the crew.

Thrown in prison back on the shore,
Their captain decided to strike an accord,
He sold out his crew to the gallows to save his own neck
In the darkest of hours and loss of all hope
One shipmate swears he's seeing a maritime ghost;
A young little thing, clad in a nicked, navy coat
And there stands Eliza with a satisfied grin
As she holds up the key to the cell that they're in
Back on the waves, she'll bask in the din as they cheer
And for generations to come
Children will ask "how could it be done?"
But that's not a tale she ever told to anyone

With her cutlass of steel and her hand on the wheel and her crimson hair wild as the flame
In tales that are told by the pirates of old, we'll always remember her name
So come hearty boys and we'll sing of the joys of a life on the tumbling sea
With a wind in our sails and yo-ho for the tales of Captain Barbary
