Essence of human existence.

Towns, once down on their luck, dwindling,
Only die-hard ranchers tenaciously holding

On by worn boot straps, every day
Inching toward insolvency, but now
Loading fat cattle for sale to boomtown’s swell.

Country once filled with growing silence broken
Only by howl of winter’s disconsolate wind–
Used up, worn out, waiting for foreclosure,
Non-negotiable liens against land homesteaded,
Tamed through endless toil of ancestors now
Resurrected by promise of riches uncounted.
Yesterday’s worries only a bad dream deferred.
