With the release of her self-titled debut EP this October, Montreal singer-songwriter NJ Taylor wants you to join her pop army. Already her single “So You” has received 70,000 YouTube views for its lyric video and has been serviced to radio in the U.K. and in Canada, along with an official music video. The single is currently nominated in the 2015 Hollywood Music in Media in the Pop category. But “Pop Army” is also getting attention. The upbeat pop/dance track, an acoustic version and a remix by J. Zuart have all made the semi-finals of the 2015 UK Songwriting Contest in the Pop, Acoustic/Folk and Electronic/Dance categories. The long-running song competition is judged by Grammy, Emmy and Brit Award-winning producers and artists. “This is a reflection of our generations / Hypnotic beats get us lost in the rhyme…It will ever let you down / It will always be around…Come join the pop army,” NJ sings. “It’s an homage to pop music and great pop figures. I was especially inspired by ABBA and Michael Jackson for this song, as they are my biggest musical influences,” NJ says. Armed with Skype and coffee within reach, NJ co-writes the modern way, with collaborator Adien Lewis who is based in San Francisco. She shuts the door, puts on the headphones and dials up her partner in rhyme, where they stay connected online for hours, choosing the beat, coming up with lyrics and melodies. “I’ve never met him. Everything we’re doing is through Skype,” NJ says. “He found me. I did an interview on a show and mentioned I was looking for collaborators and the host did a shout-out on Twitter. Adien saw that, emailed me, and wrote me a song called ‘Radar’ and I connected with it. We then started writing together.” NJ then goes in the studio with her co-producer/engineer Ghislain “Gee” Brind’Amour (Rihanna, Karl Wolf, Victoria Duffield) and arranger Shahe Sinanoglu.
