Slow And Steady (Wins The Race)

by Tim Buppert

I was drivin' cross the desert on steamy day
When a red Corvette said, "Get outta my way"
I said, "Don't start with me, I ain't the racin' kind"
But he kept on pushin' with a one track mind

He said this 'ol road ain't big enough for the both of us
Then he revved up his engine so I had to save face
Then I heard my mama's voice...
Slow and steady wins the race

Slow and steady puts 'em in their place
Slow and steady lets you set the pace
Slow and steady, no, there's no disgrace
Slow and steady... wins the race

Well the first thing I know, I'm at the startin' line
My wheels started shakin' to his engine whine
Then he blew out a blast full of smoke and fire
His dual pipe heat nearly melted my tires

You might say he really got the jump on me
But then I saw somethin' that made me give up the chase
And I really heard mama's voice...
Slow and steady wins the race

Suppose you probably know what made my speed decrease
A flashing cherry top called the state police
Well I stopped in my tracks 'bout a mile behind
Then I let my auto idle waitin' for a sign

I saw the smoky walking with his little black book
And I knew that the Corvette's goose was cooked
So I rolled right by him like I'd won first place
As I heard my mama's voice once more...
Slow and steady wins the race
