Arm's Length

by Rose Cora Perry

V1: What a lovely dream before it fell apart All those lovely things you said would break my heart And I was wrong, you were right Can't separate the truth from all your pretty lies Chorus: Away I go into the darkness Away I go I turn from all this Cannot cope with love and madness Away I go …

V1: I don’t believe in using the words I love you
For using such words only cheapens my heart
And so instead I would rather just show you
How the touch of your hand turns me so numb

V2: I don’t believe in trying to control you
For if you want me, it’s up to you to show me so
I know I am one of many who know you
So let’s not play games or make plans for unknown

Chorus: Times in the future
Let’s not define we’re together
In time, in the future
I don’t want to be her, I don’t want you as him

V3: I don’t believe in using the words I hate you
For using such words only proves there’s still care
And so instead I would rather just ignore
When things fall apart, how empty I feel

V4: The problem it seems is that you want to own me
If I felt the same, I would’ve make my case known
You should know that you’re not my one and only
So let’s not pretend or make plans for unknown

Chorus: Times in the future
Do we have to define we’re together?
In time, in the future
Why can’t we stay just the way that we are?

V5: I don’t believe in using the words I love you
For using such words leads to heartbreak and pain
And so instead I would rather just hold you
At my arm’s length
