Lyrics:

most of the brine has got to boil away
most of the air has got to choke you
most of june i spent in jail again
i don't mean jail exactly
up in the pine tree
a red squirrel looked down at me
i am losing control of the language again
i am losing control of the language again

most of the things i used to hold on to
most of the things i used to say to you
most of the ways i knew around the local roads
are disappearing daily
high in the cottonwood
you were looking down at me and you sure looked good
your hair hanging down in the leaves
your neck tilted back to make a rainbow
i was losing control of the language again
i am losing control of the language again
My heart is sad, like a mourning dove
That's lost its mate in flight
Hear the cooing of his lonely heart
Through the stillness of the night

Whispering pines, whispering pines
Tell me, is it so?
Whispering pines, whispering pines
You're the one who knows
My darling is gone, oh she's gone
And I need your sympathy
Whispering pines, send my baby back to me

See that squirrel up in the tree
His mate there on the ground
Hear their barking call of love
For the happiness they found
Is my love, still my love?
My heart is sad, like a mourning dove
That's lost its mate in flight
Hear the cooing of his lonely heart
Through the stillness of the night

Whispering pines, whispering pines
Tell me, is it so?
Whispering pines, whispering pines
You're the one who knows
My darling is gone, oh she's gone
And I need your sympathy
Whispering pines, send my baby back to me

See that squirrel up in the tree
His mate there on the ground
Hear their barking call of love
For the happiness they found
Is my love, still my love?
My heart is sad, like a mourning dove
That's lost its mate in flight
Hear the cooing of his lonely heart
Through the stillness of the night

Whispering pines, whispering pines
Tell me, is it so?
Whispering pines, whispering pines
You're the one who knows
My darling is gone, oh she's gone
And I need your sympathy
Whispering pines, send my baby back to me

See that squirrel up in the tree
His mate there on the ground
Hear their barking call of love
For the happiness they found
Is my love, still my love?
Out in the sticks
With the squirrels and the ticks
And my thirty-aught-six
I'm running out of miller light
Trucks in park
The dog wont bark
Couple hours 'till dark
Wishing one would walk by
Might as well left my gun in the gun rack
Been here all day all I killed a 12-pack

Sittin' here
Waitin' on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
Aiming at the empties
Missin' hittin' pine trees
Ain't my fault them cans keep movin'
My baby's on the phone
Saying baby come home
Where ya been and whatcha been doing
Well I've been sittin' here
Waiting on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets

The only deer I seen's
Been John Deere green
But that don't mean
That I got a raw deal
'Cause there ain't no boss
Callin' me hoss
Tickin' me off
On the edge of this corn field
On my second box of Winchester hundred grains
Ain't seen a big buck
But its been a good day

Sittin' here
Waitin' on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
Aiming at the empties
Missin' hittin' pine trees
Ain't my fault them cans keep movin'
My baby's on the phone
Saying baby come home
Where ya been and whatcha been doing
Well I've been sittin' here
Waiting on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets

Sittin' here
Waitin' on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
Aiming at the empties
Missin' hittin' pine trees
Ain't my fault them cans keep movin'
My baby's on the phone
Saying baby come home
Where ya been and whatcha been doing
Well I've been sittin' here
Waiting on a deer
Drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets

Sittin' here waitin' on a deer
Drinkin' beer
Wastin' bullets
Yeah
Hey girl, go on now
You know you've got everybody lookin'

Got a little boom in my big truck
Gonna open up the doors and turn it up
Gonna stomp my boots in the Georgia mud
Gonna watch you make me fall in love
Get up on the hood of my daddy's tractor
Up on the tool box, it don't matter
Down on the tailgate
Girl I can't wait
To watch you do your thing

Shake it for the young bucks sittin' in the honky-tonks
For the rednecks rockin' 'til the break of dawn
The DJ spinnin' that country song
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Shake it for the birds, shake it for the bees
Shake it for the catfish swimmin' down deep in the creek
For the crickets and the critters and the squirrels
Shake it to the moon, shake it for me girl

Aw, country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me

Somebody's sweet little farmer's child
With a gattle in her Bud to get a little wild
Pony-tail and a pretty smile
Rope me in from a country mile
So come on over here and get in my arms
Spin me around this big ole barn
Tangle me up like grandma's yarn
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Shake it for the young bucks sittin' in the honky-tonks
For the rednecks rockin' 'til the break of dawn
For the DJ spinnin' that country song
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Shake it for the birds, shake it for the bees
Shake it for the catfish swimmin' down deep in the creek
For the crickets and the critters and the squirrels
Shake it to the moon, shake it for me girl

Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me

Guitar

Now dance, like a dandelion
In the wind on the hill underneath the pines
Yeah, move like the river flows
Feel the kick drum down deep in your toes
All I wanna do is get to holdin' you
And get to knowin' you
And get to showin' you
And get to lovin' you
'Fore the night is through
Baby, you know what to do

Shake it for the young bucks sittin' in the honky-tonks
For the rednecks rockin' 'til the break of dawn
For the DJ spinnin' that country song
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Shake it for the birds, shake it for the bees
Shake it for the catfish swimmin' down deep in the creek
For the crickets and the critters and the squirrels
Shake it to the moon, shake it for me girl

Aw, country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me, ah country girl
Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me

Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Country girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
Girl, shake it for me
All the stations up here don't sign off with Dixie
The way they did in sweet home Alabama
And the people here don't sip Jack Daniels whiskey
The way they do in that Tennessee mountain land

I've always heard lots about the big apple
So I thought I'd come up here and see
But all I've seen so far is one big hassle
Wish I was camped out on the Okeechobee

If this is the promised land, I've had all I can stand
And I'm headed back below that Dixie line
No I just don't fit in and I'll never come back again
But I'm busted here with Dixie on my mind
Oh, I'm stuck up here and I got Dixie on my mind

These people never smile or say a word
They're all too busy tryin' to make an extra dime
Oh, I'd love to haul 'em all down around Spartanburg
And show 'em how to raise hell in Carolina

Oh, the things you know that I miss most of all
Is the freedom of the rivers and the pines
They don't do much huntin' and fishin' up here, ya know
But I have met a few squirrels and one porcupine

Well if this is the promised land, I've had all I can stand
Wish I was down in Houston town tonight
Now I just don't fit in and I'll never come back again
I'm busted here with Dixie on my mind
Oh, I'm stuck up here and I got Dixie on my mind
Sunsets on the water
Snow falls on the dock
And silent fish are snoozing
Time stands on the clock
Pine trees hug the squirrels
Happy with their cheer
And forest dreams surround us
Christmas time is here

Christmas at the lake
Snowflakes softly fall
Heartfelt joy we make
Warmth and love for all, for all

Pit fire keeps the porch warm
Smiling faces glow
Whispers of the season
Love inside us grows

Birds hum gentle carol
Echo through the air
Peaceful calm invites us
Warmth in every step
Nature's song of wonder
Magic fills the night
Hearts so full, no blunder
In the sorrow light

Birds hum gentle carols
Echo through the air
Peaceful calm invites us
Warmth in every step
Nature's song of wonder
Magic fills the night
Hearts so full, no blunder
In the sorrow light

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

The snowflakes fall as winter calls and time just seems to fly
Is it the loneliness in me that makes me want to cry
My heart is sad like a mourning dove that's lost its mate in flight
Heard the cooing of his heart through the stillness of the night
Whispering pines whispering pines tell me is it so
Whispering pines whispering pines you're the one who knows
My darling's gone oh she's gone and I need your sympathy
Whispering pines send my baby back to me

See that squirrel up in the tree his mate there on the ground
Hear their barking call of love of the happiness they found
Is my love still my love oh this I gotta know
Send a mesaage by the wind because I love her so
Whispering pines whispering pines
The monkey picked up a long bamboo stick, trying to lift the sun, but the sun kept setting…
"No... don't let the sun go down." The squirrels brought pine cones and lifted them up on top of each other, trying to hold the sun, but the sun was still setting...
From the city streets where the lights burn bright
I dream of Muskoka on a cool fall night
Where red squirrels chitter in the pine trees tall
And chipmunks scurry making homes so small
The birds sing sweet in the cool morning breeze
That's the kind of peace I need to release
But I'm stuck in traffic Toronto's daily grind
With all nature's songs playing in my mind
I'm a city soul with a country heart
Driving the 401 but those're worlds apart
The red squirrels call and the chipmunks play
While I'm stuck in the city just counting the days
From the condo lights to the lakeshore view
I'm trading all this noise for open skies so blue
Muskoka's close but it feels so far
Dreaming of the wild where the real stars are
Sitting on the dock sunning in the day
Watching the lake dance as the nature plays
At night I'm star-gazing the milky-way in sight
Nature's stunning magic under northern lights
But I'm in the city where the stars don't shine
Surrounded by construction losing track of time
Muskoka feels like it's a world away
Though it's just a few hours more if the traffic gave way
I'm a city soul with a country heart
Driving the 401 but those're worlds apart
The red squirrels call and the chipmunks play
While I'm stuck in the city just counting the days
From the condo lights to the lakeshore view
I'm trading all this noise for open skies so blue
Muskoka's close but it feels so far
Dreaming of the wild where the real stars are (the real stars are)
I'm a city soul with a country heart
Driving the 401 but those're worlds apart
The red squirrels call and the chipmunks play
While I'm stuck in the city just counting the days
All the stations up here

Is my love still my love?
One day near Christmas when I was just a child
Mama called us together and mama tried to smile
She said you know the cotton crop hadn't been too good this year
There's not a lot of spending money and well at least we're all here

I hope you won't expect a lot of Christmas presents
Just be thankful that there is plenty to eat
That'll make things a little more pleasant
And us kids got to thinking how really blessed we were
At least we were all healthy and most of all we had her

Roy cut down a pine oak tree and we drug it home Jack and me
Daddy killed a squirrel and Louise made the bread
Reba decorated the tree with popcorn strings before we went to bed
Mama and daddy sacrificed because this Christmas was kind of lean
After all there was the babies Tom and Joanne
And babies need a few things

I whittled a whistle for my brother Jack
And though we disagreed now and then
When I gave Jack that whistle he knew I thought the world of him
Mama made the girl's dresses out of flower sacks
And when she ironed them down
You couldn't tell that they hadn't come from town

A sharecropper family across the road didn't have it as good as us
They didn't even have a light and it was way past dusk
And mama said, "Well I bet they don't even have coal oil
Let alone apples and oranges and such"

Me and Jack took a jar of coal oil nd some hickernuts we'd found
We walked to the sharecropper's porch and set 'em down
A poor old ragged lady eased open the door
She picked up the coal oil and hickernuts and said
"I sure do thank you" and quickly closed the door

We started back home me and Jack
And about halfway we stopped looked back
And in the sharecropper's window at last was a light
So for one of the neighbors and for us it was a good Christmas night

Christmas came and Christmas went
Christmas that year was heaven sent
And my daddy put on his rubber boots
And paced the floor waiting for the thaw
Back home in Dyess Arkansas
Well, I live on a ridgetop
And, Lord knows, I like it just fine
Where it's windy and foggy
And quiet most all the time
Yeah, my lawn is pine needles
And my driveway is old funky dirt
And my front pathway markers
Are pieces of granite and chert
Now, my taxes are high
But I don't believe it's a sin
I've got hundred foot pine trees
That just love to dance in the wind
And a yard full of bushes
That turn into pie in July
Between blue jays and hoot owls
I've got twenty-four hour singing sky
Now, when I built my house
I cut six trees to clear out the land
But there's thirty or more left
And you know that they're gonna stand
It's a squirrel sanctuary
They think this woods is their home
And as long as I'm here
I'll make sure people leave us all alone
Yes, the hill that I live on is steep
And the road's full of ruts
And the people who live in the flatlands
Think we folks are nuts
But the ruts in my road and the curves
Keep the tourists at bay
And it's lonesome and peaceful
And you know I like it that way
Now, I work in the city
I think my job is a gas
And I know it's good for me
To travel and get off my ass
But the very best part of each trip
Is the Golden Gate Bridge
And the road like a snake
That will lead me back home to my ridge
Ah, ridgetop
Pedal up the hill
Feel the breeze
Through the trees
The mountain speaks
Dirt beneath
Wheels on the track
Riding fast
No looking back

Sun is high
Sky so blue
Forest friends
I see you too
Down the slope
Here we go
Feel the rush
Go with the flow

Ride the pines
Up and down
Mountain trails
All around
Hearts are racing
Feeling free
Mountain biking
You and me

Jump the rocks
Catch some air
Squirrels watch
They stop and stare
Feel the joy
Feel the thrill
Mountain top
What a chill

Steep descent
Hold on tight
Through the mud
Such delight
Turn the bend
Take the curve
Feel the power
Feel the verve

Ride the pines
Up and down
Mountain trails
All around
Hearts are racing
Feeling free
Mountain biking
You and me
I need a line
Please feed it to me swiftly
The pine-cones be drippin' off the tree
And now they're lyin' out back
Til the squirrel sees
Slippin' from my eye piece
Know you wanna try me
Just tread real lightly
Or get in line
I ain't got time
Bitch sponsored by verizon
Add a fifth-
Cause you got no signal
Well it's, Too damn hot to go fishing in the pond, so I'll sit out on the deck
Holding on a bottle neck
Staring at the edge of the forest line where the bushes meet the pines
reminiscing on a time
I got caught in the briars, deep in the sticks
Hurry pappy, please come quick
cause I've been chasing squirrels again
Lord momma done pitched a fit
Been running all over town, knowing good and well we're hand-to-mouth
But we'd go hunting in the howling wind, up hickory chicken hill
My what a thrill
Getting caught in the briars, deep in the sticks
hurry momma, please come quick
The local show made sure I can't afford the bills again
I got caught in the briars, deep in the sticks
Hurry Lord, please come quick
The estuary of water and wine is thin and I've lost my path again
And I've been chasing squirrels again
I grew up where the squirrel crosses the street
And the baptismal ain't near big enough, so we met Jesus at the creek
Daddy drove a Cadillac and Mama drove us to peace
My brothers walking through the woods and we're sharing all of our griefs
Drowning from the air, there's springs in the sky
Underneath my feet, the fall leaves arent even dry
When they ask me where I'm from, don't tell em the next city by
I grew up in the Theater of the Pines
Come around this place and you will find there's many things
Cities, hunger, traffic and the sound of marching bands
But the wonder awaits in the trees
Nibbling away on a nutty feast, in the shades, in the trees

Rats, bats, bugs and kangaroos are nothing but a plague
Tigers, sharks and crocodiles just wait for your mistakes
But the squirrel's untouched in his hole
Feeding the family, cos' it's gonna be cold, when the frost is all round

And when spring is knocking on the door he's waking up
Slowly sticking out is head now, yes he's waking up
Running down in a spiral so fast
Hunting for nuts, what a blast he has, when he does what he does

Come around this place and you will find there's many things
In your lonely hours here you can watch the dance
of the marvelous one in the pines
Leaving no trace of his path behind, when he does what he does

And I bet in Canada
In Canada
In Canada
In Canada
In Canada
I bet they got squirrels, too
Vancouver Song

The smell of cedar fills the air
Soft in the rain
Like perfume that covers you

Another dreary day
I walk along the trails
Squirrels
That pass me with pine cones in their arms

Deeper in the forest
We go we go
A few miles down the water is cold
Along the trails you hear the seagull song
Geese you may find join along

A small child picks up a seashell
Suddenly I remember
I had a collection too and one that was perfect and pink

When I arrive
I stare at the jade green statue
Where are they traveling to?
