Open Your Box

Yoko Ono

About Open Your Box

"Open Your Box" is a song by Yoko Ono, released on 12 March 1971 as the B-side of John Lennon's single "Power to the People". It was remixed and re-released by Orange Factory in 2001. In 1971, Ono's risqué lyrics were received in controversy ("box" is slang for vagina). She sings, "Open your box, open your trousers, open your sex, open your legs, open open open open open". The record was banned from radio in Britain, and was played on-air only when echo was added to blur the lyrics. Capitol Records, which distributed music by Apple Records in the United States, initially refused to issue the recording, and it was replaced as the B-side by another Ono track, "Touch Me".

Open your box,
Open your box,
Open your trousers,
Open your thighs,
Open your legs,
Open, open, open, open, oh.

Open, open, open, open,
Open your legs,
Open your flies,
Open your ears,
Open your nose,
Open your mouth,
Open, open, open, open, oh.
Open.

Open your cold feet,
Open, open,
Open, open, open, let's open, let's open the cities.

Open the cities,
Open, open, open the world,

9 facts about this song

"Open Your Box" is a particularly provocative song in Yoko Ono's discography. The song plays around with sexual innuendos, which was a daring move—especially for an artist of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Controversy
The song’s frank sexual content resulted in it being banned from radio play in Britain. It was even deemed "morally offensive" by the British court.
Re-Release
Despite the initial controversies and ban, "Open Your Box" was re-released in 2001 as a dance remix by Orange Factory. This version reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart the same year.
Album Appearance
Originally, "Open Your Box" was the B-side of her 1971 single "Power to the People," which she recorded with her husband John Lennon. However, it was later included in the album compilation, "Onobox" in 1992.
Music Video
A music video was created for the 2001 re-release of "Open Your Box." The video featured Yoko Ono's performances, interspersed with collage-style animations and footage of a youthful looking Ono.
Musical Style
"Open Your Box" was one of Yoko Ono's earliest introductions into rock music. It’s notable for its fusion of feminist lyrical content with avant-garde rock.
Cultural Impact
The provocative content of "Open Your Box" contributed to Yoko Ono's reputation as a provocative artist who was unafraid to express herself and challenge societal norms. Her fearless discussion of sex in the song, combined with her avant-garde style, have made the song — and Ono herself — iconic figures in feminist and avant-garde music movements.
Inspiration
The term "Open your box" was reportedly a British slang reference to female genitalia, linking back to its sexual innuendo. It was this suggestive content that led to the song's initial controversies.
Collaborations
Given that Yoko Ono and John Lennon often collaborated on their music, it's worth noting that Lennon played guitar on the original recording of "Open Your Box."
