About Stand

"Stand" is a song recorded by American band Poison, written by Richie Kotzen prior to joining the band. It was the 1st single from their 1993 Native Tongue album. The song reached number 15 on the Mainstream rock chart, #35 on the top 40 mainstream chart and #50 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also charted at number 25 on the UK Singles chart, it was also the first Poison single and music video to feature lead guitarist Richie Kotzen. The song fuses elements of country rock and gospel music; the album version includes the Los Angeles First A. M. E. Church choir on backing vocals. The single's B-side, When The Whip Comes Down, hasn't featured on any Poison album to date. This is the only song released by the band not featuring the classic lineup that is still performed by the band in concert. An acoustic version of the song appears as a bonus track on the Japanese release of Richie Kotzen's Acoustic Cuts. It features the original lyrics, which include an additional verse.

We all carry the cross and speak what we're taught
Lies and money become the white man's god
We've burned all our bridges one too many times
The time has come now to draw the line

You know you've got to stand
Stand, stand for what you believe
You know you've got to stand
Stand, stand for what you believe
Oh, you got to stand for what you believe

Alright, alright
You got to listen now
Express yourself in the face of change
Repress yourself, you surely seal your fate
You got to look inside, the answer lies in wait
Resurrect before it's too late

You know you've got to stand
Stand, stand for what you believe
You know you've got to stand
Stand, stand for what you believe
Oh, stand, stand for what you believe

Somebody rescue me, come down and rescue me
I know the soul of a good man has got to be free
When you stand, stand for what you believe

You know you've got to stand
Stand, stand for what you believe
You know you've got to stand
Stand, and I said, stand or what you believe

You know you've got to stand, to stand
Stand for what you believe
So help us to stand, stand
Stand for what you believe

Believers help us stand, yes you do
You know you need to take a stand, well oh yes you do
Come on, come on you believers help us stand

Everybody come on, everybody come on, come on
Everybody come on, everybody come on, come on
Everybody come on, everybody come on
Stand for what you need

Poison

In the context of biology, poisons are substances that cause disturbances to organisms, usually by chemical reaction or other activity on the molecular scale, when a sufficient quantity is absorbed by an organism. The fields of medicine (particularly veterinary) and zoology often distinguish a poison from a toxin, and from a venom. Toxins are poisons produced by some biological function in nature, and venoms are usually defined as toxins that are injected by a bite or sting to cause their effect, while other poisons are generally defined as substances absorbed through epithelial linings such as the skin or gut. more »
