About Happy Hour

"Happy Hour" is a 1986 single by British indie rock band The Housemartins. It was the third single from the album London 0 Hull 4 and reached number three in the UK Singles Chart. Paul had been working on the lyrics for some time before, with the song originally being called 'French England'. It was completed on Wednesday 22 January 1986 - the same day Me and the Farmer was penned. Stan had a chord progression planned for the verses, but wanted to finish the song quickly in order to go and buy some cakes, so he reused the same chords for the chorus and a quick demo was recorded, the whole process taking less than ten minutes. The band's first big hit, it stayed on the singles chart for 13 weeks, peaking in the week of 28 June 1986. The song also enjoyed exposure on United States college radio. Rolling Stone noted that despite "irrepressibly giddy music hooks", the song's "sobering" lyrics "hammer away at the hypocrisy and sexism of young British business types on the move."On their 1992 album, Gordon, the Barenaked Ladies paid tribute to this song by breaking into it at the end of the song "Hello City". The video for the song, set in a pub, featured animated plasticine figures of the band members. Comedian Phill Jupitus makes an appearance in the music video, reading a newspaper. It was filmed in The Star in St John's Wood.

It's happy hour again
I think I might be happy if I wasn't out with them
And they're happy it's a lovely place to be
Happy that the fire is real the barman is a she

Where the haircuts smile
And the meaning of style
Is a night out with the boss
Where you win or you lose
And its them who choose
And if you don't win then you've lost

What a good place to be
Don't believe it
'Cause they speak a different language
And it's never really happened to me
Don't believe it, oh no
'Cause it's never been happy for me (oh)

It's another night out with the boss
Following in footsteps overgrown with moss
And he tells me that women grow on trees
And if you catch them right they will land upon their knees

Where they open all their wallets
And they close all their minds
And they love to buy you all a drink
And then we ask all the questions
And you take all your clothes off
And go back to the kitchen sink

What a good place to be
Don't believe her
'Cause they speak a different language
And it's never really happened to me
Don't believe her, oh no
'Cause it's never been happy for me

What a good place to be
Don't believe her
'Cause they speak a different language
And it's never really happened to me
Don't believe her, oh no
'Cause it's never been happy for me (it's happy hour again)

Don't believe her, don't believe her (it's happy hour again)
Don't believe her(it's happy hour again)

And again, and again
It's happy hour again, and again, and again
It's happy hour again, and again, and again
It's happy hour again

The Housemartins

The Housemartins were an English indie pop band that was active in the 1980s. Many of the Housemartins' lyrics were a mixture of Marxist politics and Christianity, reflecting singer Paul Heaton's beliefs at the time (the back cover of London 0 Hull 4 contained the message, "Take Jesus - Take Marx - Take Hope"). more »
