Oh, is this the way they say the future's meant to feel?
Or just twenty thousand people standing in a field?
And I don't quite understand just what this feeling is
But that's okay 'cause we're all sorted out for E's and wizz
And tell me when the spaceship lands 'cause all this has just got to mean something-ing

Oh, in the middle of the night
It feels alright, but then tomorrow morning
Oh, oh, then you come down, oh

Oh yeah, the pirate radio told us what was going down
Got the tickets from some fucked up bloke in Camden Town
Oh, and no-one seems to know exactly where it is
But that's okay 'cause we're all sorted out for E's and wizz
At four o'clock the normal world seems very, very, very far away
All right

In the middle of the night
It feels alright, but then tomorrow morning
Oh, oh, then you come down, oh

Just keep on moving

Everybody asks your name, they say we're all the same and now it's
"Nice one," "geezer"
But that's as far as the conversation went
I lost my friends, I dance alone
It's six o'clock, I want to go home
But it's "no way," "not today"
Makes you wonder what it meant
And this hollow feeling grows and grows and grows and grows
And you want to call your mother
And say "mother, I can never come home again
'Cause I seem to have left an important part of my brain somewhere
Somewhere in a field in Hampshire, all right"

In the middle of the night
It feels alright, but then tomorrow morning
Oh, oh, then you come down
Oh, oh, then you come down
Oh, what if you never come down?

Lyric Meaning
The title "Sorted for E's and Wizz" is a British slang phrase meaning prepared with ecstasy and speed, two popular party drugs. The song lyrics depict the journey of a group of friends attending a rave.
Controversial Artwork
The single's artwork caused a media stir in the UK as it appeared to be a 'do it yourself' guide on creating a paper 'wrap' or envelope for storing loose drugs. Amid the controversy, the band and sleeve designer, Peter Saville, defended the artwork explaining it was an element of party culture.
Public Response
Sheffield city council, Pulp’s hometown council, put out a statement decrying the band and especially frontman Jarvis Cocker. He was accused of encouraging drug use when the band placed a "how-to" diagram for folding a drug-taking envelope on the CD version of the single.
Retraction and Apology
The initial 80,000 copies of the release had to be withdrawn following the controversy, and a sticker was applied to later pressings: "The diagram shows one method of consuming illegal drugs. This is neither safe nor legal, Pulp recommend you don't do it."
Music Festival Inspiration
The lyrics of "Sorted for E's & Wizz" were inspired by an open-air summer music festival attended by Jarvis Cocker in 1989. He later said that the song is a cautionary tale about the emptiness that can follow such hedonistic pursuits.
Awards
In 2003, in a poll conducted by "The Observer", listeners voted "Sorted for E's & Wizz" as the 87th Best British Song Ever.
