About It's Over

"It's Over" is an American song composed by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees and sung by Orbison. Produced by Fred Foster and engineered by Bill Porter, the song was released as a 45rpm single by Monument Records in 1964, "It's Over" typifies the operatic rock ballad. The single entered the United States Cashbox chart on April 11, 1964, peaking at No.10 (on May 23, 1964), and reached No. 9 on the Billboard pop music chart. Meanwhile, after entering the United Kingdom singles chart on April 30, 1964, "It's Over" reached No. 1 on June 25, 1964 (making it Orbison's second UK No.1 single [the first was "Only the Lonely" in 1960]). "It's Over" spent 2 weeks at No.1 on the UK singles chart, out of a total of 18 weeks on that chart. The song also spent ten weeks in the Irish Singles Chart, three of which were at No.1. It was one of six chart-toppers for Orbison in Ireland. The song also appears on Orbison's 1964 album More of Roy Orbison's Greatest Hits and his 1989 posthumous album A Black & White Night Live from the 1988 HBO television special.

Your baby doesn't love you any more
Golden days before they end
Whisper secrets to the wind
Your baby won't be near you any more

Tender nights before they fly
Send falling stars that seem to cry
Your baby doesn't want you any more
It's over

It breaks your heart in two, to know she's been untrue
But oh what will you do? then she said to you
There's someone new we're through we're through
It's over it's over it's over

All the rainbows in the sky start to even say goodbye
You won't be seeing rainbows any more
Setting suns before they fall, echo to you that's all that's all
But you'll see lonely sunset after all

It's over it's over it's over it's over

Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly/country and western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success came with Monument Records between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs placed on the Billboard Top Forty, including "Only the Lonely", "Crying", and "Oh, Pretty Woman". His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of "In Dreams" in David Lynch's Blue Velvet revived his career in the 1980s. In 1988, he joined the supergroup Traveling… more »
