About Sweetest Girl

"The Sweetest Girl" (sic) is a song written by Green Gartside. It was originally performed by Gartside's band Scritti Politti, and released in 1981 as a single. The single peaked at number 64 in the UK Singles Chart. The keyboards are played by Robert Wyatt. The song became a marginally bigger hit five years later, when covered by Madness. Their version of the song reached No. 35 in the UK and No. 29 in Ireland in early 1986. Madness changed the title of the song slightly, losing both the definite article and the quotation marks around the last two words in "The "Sweetest Girl"", thereby rendering it as "Sweetest Girl".

Sweetest girl in all the world
These eyes are for you only
[x2]
Sweetest girl in all the world
These words that die before me
[x2]

When we walk in the park
I never can tell
When when we walk in the dark
I never can tell
It's just loving it
Ooooo loving it

Sweetest boy in all the world
His life has got so lonely
[x2]
Maddest group in all the world
How could they do this to me
[x2]

What I want I shall take
What you think that you know
Oooo such an awful mistake
To never let go

When the government falls
I wish I could tell
When necessity calls
I never can tell

The weakest link in any chain
I always want to find them
The strongest words in each belief
Find out what's behind them
Politics is prior to the vagaries of science
She left because she understood
The value of defiance

Sweetest girl in all the world
These eyes are for you only

The sweetest boy in all the world
His life has got so lonely

Sweetest girl in all the world
These words that die before you

She wants to go but she don't know why

Loving it oooo loving it

Maddest group in all the world
How could they do this to me

The sweetest boy in all the world
His life has got so lonely

Sweetest girl in all the world
These words that die before you

The sweetest boy in all the world
His life has got so lonely
