My Old Piano

Chic, Diana Ross

About My Old Piano

"My Old Piano" is a song by American singer Diana Ross. The song, written and produced by Chic members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, was released as the third and final single in the United States, and the second single in the United Kingdom and other countries, from her tenth studio album, Diana (1980). Ross sings the song about the joy of playing a piano, describing it as if it were a person. Unlike "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out", "My Old Piano" was not as successful in the United States (as it was issued as a single nearly two years after the album's release, by which time Ross had departed Motown Records); however, it was a commercial success in Europe, particularly in the UK, where it was a Top 10 hit and earned her a British Phonographic Industry silver disc award for sales in excess of 250,000 copies. In the music video, Ross appears performing the song in an apartment with an old piano.

Love is called
My old piano
I have a ball
With my old piano

My baby entertains
The real life of my parties
But still retains
In all the dignity
His international style
Exudes an air of royalties
His eighty eight key smile
Is so pleasant to see

Love is called
My old piano
I have a ball
With my old piano

[Chorus]
My old keyboard
Won't stand for a corner
He demands the middle of the room
Your heart dissolves
While he tips you so gracefully
Till you're involved
In a baby grand affair

Love is called
My old piano
I have a ball
With my old piano

He entertains
The real life of my parties
But still retains
In all the dignity
His international style
Exudes an air of royalties
His eighty eight key smile
Is so pleasant to see

[Chorus]

Love is called
My old piano
I have a ball
With my old piano
