Lovato co-wrote "Cool for the Summer" with Alexander Erik Kronlund, Savan Kotecha, and the song's producers Max Martin and Ali Payami. It is a pop rock song that features an electronic instrumental arrangement with a synthesized beat, and an electric-guitar riff is heard during the chorus. The song attracted attention for its bi-curious insinuations and sexually suggestive lyrics.
