About Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is a hard rock song by the Australian band AC/DC. Written by group members Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Bon Scott, it was recorded for the title track of their album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, released in September 1976. It was also released as a single – first in Australia in October 1976 with "R. I. P. (Rock in Peace)" as its B-side, and then in the UK in January 1977 as a maxi-single with "Big Balls" and "The Jack" as its B-sides. Once the Dirty Deeds album was finally released in the US in 1981 the "Dirty Deeds. .." single was released there (backed by "Highway To Hell"), where it reached number four on the then-new Top Tracks chart. The song ranked No. 24 on VH1's 40 Greatest Metal Songs and in 2009 it was named the 31st best hard rock song of all time also by VH1. It features a backing vocal consisting of a heavy breathing sound, made on the downbeat during verses. It also features the title in a spoken-word style at the end of the chorus; plus a scream at the end of the song. The full-length recording (approximately 4:11) has the title of the song chanted four times starting at 3:09, but on the more common edited version (approximately 3:51) the chant is heard only twice.

If you're havin' trouble with the high school head
He's givin' you the blues
You want to graduate but not in 'is bed
Here's what you gotta do
Pick up the phone
I'm always home
Call me any time
Just ring
36 24 36 hey
I lead a life of crime

Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap

You got problems in your life of love
You got a broken heart
He's double dealin' with your best friend
That's when the teardrops start, fella
Pick up the phone
I'm here alone
Or make a social call
Come right in
Forget about him
We'll have ourselves a ball

Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap

If you got a lady and you want her gone
But you ain't got the guts
She keeps naggin' at you night and day
Enough to drive ya nuts
Pick up the phone
Leave her alone
It's time you made a stand
For a fee
I'm happy to be
Your back door man

Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap yeah
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap

Concrete shoes, cyanide, TNT
Done dirt cheap
Neckties, contracts, high voltage
Done dirt cheap

Dirty deeds
Do anything you wanna do
Done dirty cheap
Dirty deeds
Dirty deeds
Dirty deeds
Done dirt cheap

10 facts about this song

Song Release
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is a song by Australian hard rock band AC/DC. It was released as the lead single from their third studio album of the same name in November 1976.
Lyrics and Concept
The song was inspired by Beany and Cecil cartoons, where the main villain, Dishonest John, carried a business card that read, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Holidays, Sundays, and Special Rates." AC/DC thought the phrase was a good idea for a song, which eventually led to the anthem-like tune about a hitman with competitive rates.
Album Success
Although the "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" album was not initially released in the United States until 1981, it was a massive success. Once it was made available in the U.S., the album went multi-Platinum.
Numerical Name Influence
The title track 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' was originally to be called 'Dirty Deeds Done for Thirty Bob', which is slang for '30 shillings.' This change turned the title into a memorable, rhythmic phrase perfect for the chorus.
Live Performances
During live performances, AC/DC routinely invites audience members on stage to sing the "I tell ya" section of the song.
Songwriters
The song was written by AC/DC's founding members, brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, along with then-lead vocalist Bon Scott. Bon Scott’s cheeky humor shines throughout the song.
Chart Performance
Despite its popularity and iconic status, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" only reached #47 on Australia's Kent Music Report Singles Chart when initially released.
Song ’s Theme
The song has a dark theme – it narrates how someone who has enemies or needs dirty deeds done can call a certain phone number, and the deeds will be executed.
Tribute to Bon Scott
After singer Bon Scott’s death, the song was frequently performed by his successors. These performances were seen as a tribute to the late singer.
Recognition
The song is considered a staple of AC/DC's repertoire, and Rolling Stone magazine listed "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
