About Rhythm of My Heart

"Rhythm of My Heart" is a rock song written by Marc Jordan and John Capek which Dutch rock and roll artist René Shuman included on his 1986 debut album René Shuman. In 1991 Rod Stewart recorded the song for his album Vagabond Heart. The song was produced by Trevor Horn. It is the album's opening track, and was released as its first single. The single reached No. 3 on the UK chart and No. 5 on the US chart. The melody is an adaptation of "Loch Lomond". The meter, stanzas and lyrics are also based on the poem, a nod to Stewart's own Scottish heritage. Eric Rigler played the Great Highland bagpipes heard during Stewart's version. Stewart's version of the song was subsequently used during the closing credits of the 1996 family movie Loch Ness. The single was also played during the bar scenes in the 2000 film The Perfect Storm, scenes which are set several months after Stewart's song was released (October 1991) so the song gives a time-period context. "Rhythm of My Heart" was also covered by Runrig, who released it as a single in 1996. This is the version heard on the Loch Ness soundtrack when it was released on CD in 2005, instead of Stewart's version heard in the movie. A live version of the song from his 2013 performance at The Troubadour, West Hollywood was included on the deluxe edition of the album Time. Amy Macdonald and Stewart performed the song (with adjusted lyrics) at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Across the street the river runs
Down in the gutter life is slipping away
Let me still exist in another place
Running down under cover
Of a helicopter blade

The flames are getting higher
In effigy
Burning down the bridges of my memory
Love may still alive
Somewhere someday
Where they're downing only deer
A hundred steel towns away

Oh, rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words "I Love you"
Rolling off my tongue
No never will I roam
For I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
I'll be sailing

Photographs and kerosene
Light up my darkness
Light it up
Light it up
I can still feel the touch
Of your thin blue jeans
Running down the alley
I've got my eyes all over you, baby
Oh, baby

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words "I Love you"
Rolling off my tongue
No never will I roam
For I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
I'll be sailing

Oh, yeah

Oh, I've got lightning in my veins
Shifting like the handle
Of a slot machine
Love may still exist
In another place
I'm just yanking back the handle
No expression on my face

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words "I Love you"
Rolling off my tongue
No never will I roam
For I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
I'll be sailing

Oh, the rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words "I Love you"
Rolling off my tongue
No never will I roam
For I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
I'll be sailing

The rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words "I Love you" rolling off my tongue
No never will I roam
For I know my place is home
Where the ocean meets the sky
I'll be sailing
