King's Singers

The King's Singers are a British a cappella, two-time Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble who celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008. Their name recalls King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars in 1968. In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Thereafter they began to reach a wider international audience, appearing frequently on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the U.S. In 1987, they were prominently featured as guests on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound Of Christmas. By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love were ever won't to gae
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond

O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond

'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond
Where in deep purple hue, the hieland hills we view
And the moon comin' out in the gloamin'

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart, it kens nae second spring again
Tho' the waefu' may cease from their greeting

O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond

Your lyric in stanza 1, line 3, is spelled "wont", not "won't". "Wont" is an archaic word rarely, but sometimes (mainly by pompous writers), used today that means "are accustomed to" or "are used to". It is not the contraction that means "will not". Thus the lyric means that Loch Lomond is "where we were accustomed to going". The ballad was once part of our standard concert repertoire in the Harvard Glee Club, with which I sang first tenor from 1973 to 1976.
