About I Can't Live With You

"I Can't Live with You" is a song by the British rock group Queen. It was released as a promo single from their 1991 album Innuendo. The single was released by Hollywood Records in the United States only, peaking at #28 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The song was written by Brian May but credited to all four members of Queen. "I Can't Live with You" was originally written for May's debut solo album, Back to the Light. He gave it to the band since all three other members of Queen were fond of the track. Drums were programmed on synth by May, and the keyboard-pads were added by the producer David Richards. For this promotional single, American producer Brian Malouf remixed the original album track. The remix was titled "I Can't Live with You (Malouf Mix)". Despite the promo sleeve only displaying one track, there are two on the single, the other being "I Can't Live with You (Malouf Mix Edit)". The Malouf Mix uses slightly different lead vocal tracks by Freddie Mercury, louder and tighter harmony tracks, and reprogrammed synth drums, resulting in a much more punchy and "over the top" poppy version than included on the album.

I can't live with you
But I can't live without you
I can't let you stay
Ooh but I can't live if you go away
I don't know just how it goes
All I know is I can't live with you

Yeah I'm having a hard time
I'm walking a fine line between hope and despair
You may think that I don't care
But I traveled a long road to get hold of my sorrow
I tried to catch a dream
But nothing's what it seems
Love is saying baby it's all right
When deep inside you're really petrified
Lover turns to hater
On this escalator

I can't live with you, yeah
But I can't live without you
I can't breathe if you stay
But I can't bear you to go away
I don't know what time it is
All I know is I can't live with you

We're stuck in a bad place
We're trapped in a rat race
And we can't escape
Maybe there's been some mistake
We're trying to make a high score
We're walking through a closed door
And nobody's winning
We're just sinning against ourselves

Hold on baby tell me it's all right
Anger's breaking from the hurt inside
Passions screaming hotter
Doin' what we gotta do, yeah

I can't live with you I can't live with you
I can't live I can't live
I can't I can't live with you
But baby I'll never ever leave you

I can't live with you
But I can't live without you
Cause I'm in love with you
Ooh and everything about you

I can't live with you
No I just can't live I just can't live
I can't live with you
Yeah and I can't live without you
Through the madness through the tears
We've still got each other
For a million years, yeah

Ooh yeah
Yeah, I can't live without you, yeah yeah
I can't live without you
Yeah yeah, oh oh oh
I can't live without you
I can't live without you
I can't live without you
Oh oh, I can't live without you, baby baby baby
Without you
I can't live without you

Queen

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1971, originally consisting of the late Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Queen's earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works, incorporating more diverse and innovative styles in their music. After the late and great Freddie Mercury died, Queen continued to tour with multiple acts including Paul Rodgers, and currently, Adam Lambert. more »

"I Can't Live with You" is a track from Queen’s 1991 album, "Innuendo." It was the first album released after lead singer Freddie Mercury had publicly announced he was suffering from AIDS.
Composition
The song was primarily penned by guitarist Brian May but represents a joint effort from the band, which is normal for Queen songs.
Lyrics
The lyrics describe a failed, toxic relationship, as evident from the main line, "I can't live with you, but I can't live without you." The lyrics can be interpreted as a metaphor for Mercury’s failing health situation.

Although "I Can't Live with You" wasn’t released as a single in the UK, it reached 28 on the US Billboard Rock Chart in 1991.
Music Style
The song stays true to Queen's signature mix of rock and pop, complete with Brian May's multi-layered guitar work and Mercury's strong vocals.
Production Element
Brian May reportedly used a keyboard to simulate the sound of his Red Special guitar for the song's rhythm track, leading to the creation of a heavier sound.
Album Success
"Innuendo," while not Queen's most famous album, was critically acclaimed and peaked at number one in the UK Albums Chart.
Revival Version
A reworked version of "I Can't Live with You" was later included on Queen’s posthumous album, "Made in Heaven," released four years after Mercury's death.
Live Performances
The song was never performed live by Queen, likely due to Freddie Mercury's deteriorating health.
Popularity
"I Can't Live with You" is less well-known than some of Queen's other hits but is widely respected by fans for its lyrics, Mercury's powerful delivery, and the band's musicianship.
