About Ich tu dir weh

"Ich tu dir weh" (German for "I hurt you") is a song by German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein. It was released as the second single from their sixth studio album, Liebe ist für alle da (2009), on 5 February 2010. A music video for the song was previously released online on 21 December 2009. The song contains controversial lyrics surrounding sadomasochism. Because of this, Liebe ist für alle da was placed on the "index" maintained by the German BPjM, leading to a forced censored re-release of the album. In May 2010, the original uncensored album and the single were de-indexed and consequently released in Germany.

10 facts about this song

Song's Release and Album
"Ich tu dir weh" was released in February 2010 as the second single from "Liebe ist für alle da", the sixth studio album of the German band Rammstein.
Ban on Sales
The album "Liebe ist für alle da" was indexed by the German government, forbidding its sale to minors and public exhibition because it was classified as a "dangerous influence on the youth." This was, in a great deal, due to explicit lyrics and themes of "Ich Tu Dir Weh".
Censorship on Track
In the censored version of the album, "Ich Tu Dir Weh" does not exist and is replaced by 5 minutes and 2 seconds of silence, to which the band humorously decided to give the title "5/4".
Promise on Lyrics
The song continues the tradition of Rammstein’s lyrics displaying dark humor with a mix of romance and sadomasochism. The lyrical theme is abstract but focuses on physical and emotional pain inflicted in a romantic relationship, with clear references to BDSM play.
Controversial Music Video
The music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, is equally provocative as it contains intense scenes of needle play, band members playing on a 'liquid' stage with blue goo spewing from vocalist Till Lindemann’s mouth at intervals.
Live Performances
"Ich tu dir weh" is notorious for its live performance, which includes Lindemann singing from inside a luminous cauldron, with his face illuminated by a surgical head lamp, biting into a glowing light bulb that showers sparks.
Use of TECHNOGEL®
The music video features trademark use of TECHNOGEL®, a transparent, polyurethane gel that appears in a few other Rammstein music videos and has become an iconic symbol for the band.
Missing Quality Stamp
This particular song caused the entire album to be blacklisted by the BPjM (German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) and lacked an official “Quality” stamp, marking a significant event in the band's journey.
Album's Comeback
In June 2010, a German court removed "Liebe ist für alle da" from the censorship list, allowing the album, including "Ich tu dir Weh", to be sold again and played on mainstream media.
Appreciation
Despite the controversies, "Ich tu dir weh" remains one of Rammstein's popular songs, showcasing the band's knack for theatrics, raw power, and a unique take on societal taboos.
