About Sleep Tonight

"Sleep Tonight" is a song by the Rolling Stones, from their 1986 album Dirty Work. It is the second song on the ten-track album where lead vocals are performed by Keith Richards, "Too Rude" being the first. This was the first time two songs sung by Richards appeared on a Rolling Stones album; since Dirty Work all their studio albums have included at least two tracks featuring Richards' lead vocals (except Blue & Lonesome). Richards wrote the song (credited as a Jagger/Richards composition) on piano in the Paris recording studio's control room. Ronnie Wood liked the developing song and they recorded it together unaccompanied. Backing vocals and strings were added later. Wood played drums, since Charlie Watts wasn't present for the session, and Watts later said "he could not have done better."Richards has stated that his singing during the Dirty Work sessions "thickened up" his voice: Since Jagger was absent from the studio much of the time, Richards provided guide vocals for many tracks and learned new microphone techniques. His sturdy but smokey vocal presence on "Sleep Tonight" foreshadows the strong and emotive singing on his solo records and later Rolling Stones tracks.

You better get some sleep tonight
You better get some sleep tonight
Honey, just warn your friends
You better get some sleep tonight

You always watch the sun go down
The same old shadows crawl over town
Those thoughts of you it shivers me
The moon grows cold in memory

Baby you better get some sleep tonight
All you got to do is close your eyes
You better get some sleep tonight

I wish you baby, all the best
If you turn out like all the rest
This darkness baby, it's chilling me
Stars store down in sympathy

Baby you better get some sleep tonight
All you got to do is close your eyes
Baby you better get some sleep tonight

You better get some sleep tonight
You better get some sleep tonight
Warn all your friends
You better keep them out of sight
You better get some sleep tonight

They robbed you of your dignity
They even steal your heart from me
It ain't revenge, you understand
Baby I just want to know who death this hand

Baby, ah that's alright
Baby you better get some sleep tonight
All you got to do is close your eyes
Baby you better get some sleep tonight
You better get some sleep tonight
You better get some sleep tonight

Darryl Jones (bassist) and Chuck Leavell (keyboardist) are regular contributors but not full band members. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted the Rolling Stones in 1989, noting that "critical acclaim and popular consensus has accorded them the title of the “World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”Rolling Stone magazine ranked them 4… more »
