About Hope That We Can Be Together Soon

"Hope That We Can Be Together Soon is a song written by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff that was originally recorded by Dusty Springfield as "Let's Get Together Soon" and was included in her 1970 album A Brand New Me (which was also produced by Gamble and Huff). The composition scored a hit when it was released by Sharon Paige and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in 1975. Released in 1975 from the album To Be True, it reached #1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart in the summer of that year. It reached #42 on the Billboard Hot 100. Unlike most of the group's singles from this time period, Melvin handles most of the vocal duties, while Teddy Pendergrass appears for one line and the closing part of the song. Paige would later take on a more prominent role in the group after Pendergrass left the group for a solo career.

When I'm away from you, boy
All I seem to do is cry
And then when I see you, boy
My, how the time does fly

I don't know if you need and love me
The way I love and need you

I hope that we can be together soon
I hope that we can be together soon
I hope that we can be together soon
Real soon, can you make it real soon?

When I think about you, girl
Chills run up and down my spine
And if my wish would come true, girl
I'd be with you all the time

For the right, day and night I'm gonna miss you
All my lonely heart seems to do

I hope that we can be together soon
(Maybe tomorrow)
I hope that we can be together soon
(Maybe tomorrow)
I feel that we can be together soon
But will you make it real soon?
(I can't wait)
Can you make it real soon?
(I can't wait, I can't wait)

I hope that we can be together
I swear I can't wait any longer
Every day my love grows stronger
Ooh, baby, and I, I'd like to make it real soon

Despite group founder and original lead singer Harold Melvin's top billing, the Blue Notes' most famous member was Teddy Pendergrass, their lead singer during the successful years at Philadelphia International.
