About Steam

"Steam" is the second single from English rock musician Peter Gabriel's 1992 album Us. Gabriel has said that the song is about a relationship in which the woman is sophisticated, bright, cultured, and knows everything about anything and that the man knows nothing about anything, except, he does know about the woman, and she doesn't know much about herself. In certain countries, "Steam" was more successful than Gabriel's previous single, "Digging in the Dirt", but in others, it was not. It reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (Gabriel's final top 40 single in the US and his last entry on the Hot 100 to date), and number one on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song was a number-one hit in Canada, topping the RPM Top Singles chart on 27 February 1993, knocking Whitney Houston's massive hit "I Will Always Love You" off the top spot after a ten-week run. It was also a top-ten hit in New Zealand and Ireland, peaking at number seven in both countries, and in Iceland, where it reached number five. more »

Peter Gabriel

Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer, musician, and songwriter who rose to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the progressive rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career. His 1986 album, So, is his most commercially successful, and the album's biggest hit, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and the song is the most played music video in the history of the station. more »
