About Goody Goody

"Goody Goody" is a 1936 popular song composed by Matty Malneck, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song is referenced several times in the 1936 Kaufman and Hart play "You Can't Take It With You". Popular recordings in 1936 were by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra (with vocalist Helen Ward), Freddy Martin & His Orchestra (vocal by Terry Shand), and by Bob Crosby & His Orchestra. Frankie Lymon performed it live on television on several occasions, including twice in 1957 on The Ed Sullivan Show. He also had a hit with his recording of the song in the United States, reaching #20 that year, as well as #24 in the UK. It was released as a recording with his group the Teenagers, but was, in fact, a solo recording. Shelley Winters's character in Curtis Harrington's 1971 thriller What's the Matter with Helen? plays the song at the end of the movie. The song was performed by 'Wayne & Wanda' in an episode of The Muppet Show. A recording by the BBC Dance Orchestra was featured in the film The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007).

Good thing, got yourself a good thing
It's a good thing
It's a good thing, got yourself a good thing
I won't let you go

So you met someone who set you back on your heels
Goody Goody
So you met someone and now you know how it feels
Goody Goody

So you gave him your heart too
Just as I gave mine to you
And he broke it in little pieces
Now how do you do?

So you lie awake just singin' the blues all night
Goody Goody
So you think that love's a barrel of dynamite
Hooray and hallelujah

You had it comin' to ya
Goody Goody for him
Goody Goody for me
And I hope you're satisfied, you rascal you

Good thing, got yourself a good thing
It's a good thing, got yourself a good thing
I won't let you go
So you met someone who set you back on your heels

Goody Goody
So you met somebody and now you know how it feels
Goody Goody
So you gave him your heart too

Just as I gave mine to you
And he stuck it in his collection, section 92
So you lie awake just singin' the blues all night
So you think that love's a barrel of dynamite

Hooray and hallelujah
You had it comin' to ya
Goody Goody for him
Goody Goody for me

And I hope you're satisfied, you rascal you
