About Then Came You

"Then Came You" is a 1974 song recorded by American soul singer Dionne Warwick and American R&B group The Spinners. It was credited to Dionne Warwicke and the Spinners (from 1971–1975, Warwick added a final 'e' to her last name). The track was written by Sherman Marshall and Phillip T. Pugh, and produced by Thom Bell. Released during a time that Warwick's chart fortunes were at an ebb after moving to Warner Bros. Records in 1972, the Philadelphia soul single was a rare mid-1970s success for the singer. Sung as a duet with Spinners main lead singer Bobby Smith and the Spinners, who were one of the most popular groups of the decade, the song became Warwick's first ever single to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also became her highest-charting R&B record reaching number two on that chart, behind Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" (itself a Hot 100 number-one single). It was also the first number-one pop hit for the Spinners. It became an RIAA gold record, and was nominated for a Grammy.

Ever since I met you
Seems I can't forget you
The thought of you keeps runnin' through
The back of my mind

Every time I'm near you
I get that urge to feel you
Just touchin' you and lovin' you
Makes everything right (Tell me how you feel, baby)

I never knew love before (Oh, no)
Then came you, you, then came you
I never knew love before
Then came you, ooh, then came you
You

Now that I have found you
How did I live without you (I don't know, baby)
It's plain to see you're all I need
To satisfy me

I'm so darn proud of you
I want to sing about you (Sing, sing, sing, baby)
So all I know you made love grow
By touchin' my hand

Oh, oh, I never knew love before
Then came you, you, then came you
I never knew love before
Then came you, ooh, then came you
Hey, then came you

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I never knew love before
Then came you, then came you
I never knew love before
Then came you, you, then came you

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I never knew love before
Then, hey, then came you
I never knew love before
Hey, then came you, you, you, you, you, you

Hey, hey, you know that I never knew love before, no
Then came you, then came you
I never knew love before
Then came you, ooh, then came you

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I never knew love before
Then came you, then came you
I never knew love before
Then came you, you, you, you, then came you

No, no, I never knew love before
