The easy, fast & fun way to learn how to sing: 30DaySinger.com

It seems a white man has the floor that's nothing new
We got the ceiling, got the walls, got the cameras too
Privilege spilling out my orifices this is for real
I'ma take my sweet time and know, I'ma stumble for real

Growing up and being told we're all good people
No idea that in fact, we were shitty ass people
When it came to loving justice, and being that peace
Instead we talked about it, without disturbing the peace

My best friend in high school was black
And looking back, it's like I faked that I didn't know that
Man, the fear of discomfort is fucking lethal
Translucent yet thick, suffocating and suppressing a people

Thinking I was just a good person, you know not even white
No idea that very idea was not even right
Thinking racism was something out there that's a real shame
No idea I was part of it, had to go back to the start of it

Learn the history of a country in unspoken denial
Shocked to learn what I already knew, like I had it on file
When the past ain't passed, when the heart don't close
That's when a young black girl starts to the matter the most

That's when it's not just an idea, but a lived reality
Their freedom and my freedom is a false duality
Feel this ripple through my whole life, including the pain
Touch my gut, touch my lungs, touch my heart, touch my brain

A phrase bell has me trying to rhyme
'White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy'
It's a tough line
To hold and to cross, stakes get thick and robust
Life on the line and you don't even know who you're trying to trust

Saying all this feels like putting my skinny white neck out
Part of me wants to cut this track, give an excuse just straight duck out
But I can't anymore, I've crossed a line and can't go back
To faking everything's alright whether you're white or you're black

Knowing I'm only here because of what friends told
About being on the fringes, about feeling disempowered
I'll never forget the way Randy's body moved
The day he showed me what collective trauma can do

Oceans of gratitude for those before who laid down tracks
Underground and in the booth, so I could lay these tracks
To bow and attack, extract what's yielding collapse
Humble, open and bruised, and no there's no app for that

It's a mess to undress what I thought was success
And express and confess how my actions oppress
I don't mean to be cute with it, though sometimes I am
What I mean's to be honest and simply to do what I can

My aspiration for a nation built on a plantation
Within and without, shift to a new destination
The thread of King's garment is alive and well
Maybe all we need is to wake from a spell
And cast a new one as well
