It was a freezing cold day.
There was a little girl 
with tattered clothes 
and no shoes on.
She cried out with a weak voice.
Matches for sale, matches for sale!
It's so cold. 
No one even glanced at her,
and they just passed by.
As the next day was 
New Year's day, 
everybody was busy 
heading home with presents.

Everyone is going back 
to a warm home
where their families are waiting.
The little match girl sat down 
under a window,
trying to get herself warm. 
She lit a match.
With a little sparkle, 
a warm stove appeared 
in front of her.
It's a stove!
The little match girl 
tried to approach the stove 
to warm her two frozen feet.
But then the flame went out 
and the stove vanished, too.
The girl lit another match.
This time, 
a table full of delicious food appeared.
Wow, it looks so good.
When she tried to reach the food, 
all of it disappeared.
The second match also went out.
The little match girl again lit a match.
Now, she was under 
a huge beautiful Christmas tree.  
Oh, it's so beautiful.
Candles decorating the tree 
went up to the sky one by one
and became stars in the night sky.
The little stars reminded 
the little match girl 
of her grandmother 
who had passed away.
Oh, grandmother, 
I miss you so much.
She earnestly rubbed another match.
Grandmother!
The little match girl was afraid of 
her grandmother vanishing, 
so she burned 
all the matches she had.
