As morning breaks through the darkness
I sit–wide awake
An alarm unneeded, as the shockwave of my heartrate acted in its place
There is deep unease within my being
Unparalleled by any other day this year
Today I reunite with my father
It's been four years since our paths intertwined
And in the twenty-three collective
His absence is all that has remained consistent

Surely–that is our relationship
And here I sit, attempting to quiet the distress of my soul
Crying out to God to make me whole and to deliver serenity

And as this old house creaks and aches
From years of weathering and onslaughts from the seasons
I too can resonate with its groans, as my frame cries the same song
I find myself writing words on Moleskine paper
Reaching out to God in my space of need
Longing for those near to be support beams
But in these moments of despair, they are not there
So, with tattered frame, I inhale peace through words on those pages
Hoping they will be the salve to a soul that is raging
Give strength to legs as weakness is plaguing
And some promise that destruction won't be the product of engagement

This is a moment to make something from nothing
Newness from the rubble that I've lifelong been stuck in
And press onward toward a life of Christ-likeness
Show a man Jesus through a love of that is priceless
It's clear that this relationship has produced much destruction
And it still remains unclear if this is wisdom or reduction
I owe him nothing
Not an ounce of my person
But I will echo Micah and continue to love mercy
So, amidst absence of support structures
God grant me the something that it takes to love him
And build something–anything new
And with exhale, I step one foot after another
Grabbing luggage and every ounce of bravery I can muster
And as my keys set explosions toward reconstruction
I pray for newness to built from this luncheon
And as the sky hangs in tensions of grey
I have but one request: God, make me brave
