Johnny Cash is dead And Bob Dylan's busy This story I'm about to tell They'd tell it better than me But Johnny Cash is dead And Bob Dylan's busy So for the story of Stonechild I guess it's up to you and me Stonechild Chiefstick Was a Native American man He was proud of his country's flag As any native man can When he was shot down like a dog On July 3, 2019 He was celebrating the Fourth of July In a small-town jubilee He was shot down at 39 For a screwdriver in his hand Policeman all loaded for bear Said he feared the darker man Armed, locked and loaded Like a soldier in a combat trance When the call came in of a crazy acting man Stoney didn't stand a chance Shots rang out, he fell to the ground The crowd scattered in a panic But not before a hundred kids saw And ran off wondering Just what that man had done just then That was bad enough to die He'd wanted to see the fireworks show At a small town Fourth of July He was maybe high, maybe drunk Like so many in that crowd He was out among the people Maybe got a little loud And though race shouldn't play a part We can't ignore that it just might In a small white town in the USA Just before the Fourth of July Stonechild Chiefstick He ought to be alive today He ought've seen the fireworks show It went on anyway He was as right to celebrate as any As anyone in that crowd Policeman was wrong to shoot him down It's high time we say it out loud Some say the officer too Deserves some sympathy He was doing his job, it was just a split second He had nothing against Stoney The DA, surprise, said it's justified The officer's back on the street It's the devil who makes excuses When a man's lying six feet deep Stonechild Chiefstick He ought to be alive today He ought've seen the fireworks show It went on anyway He was as right to celebrate as any As anyone in that crowd Policeman was wrong to shoot him down It's high time we say it out loud Sometimes late at night I'm down by the waterside Watching the fog coming off the big rock From the spot where Stonechild died When the fog is thick and the light's just right I can see his spirit rise He's waiting to see the fireworks Coming this Fourth of July Johnny Cash is dead Bob Dylan's busy So for this story of Stonechild I guess it's up to you and me Let's sing it loud, let's sing it again So he doesn't die in vain 'Cuz killing a man for being a little crazy That just can't be okay Let's sing it loud, let's sing it again So he doesn't die in vain 'Cuz killing a man for being a little crazy That just can't be okay
